Cute little town. Easy to book a bus $16 round-trip to the Mendenhal Glacier -- worthwhile. LOTS of stands selling tours as you disembark the ship. Spend some time in the Red Dog Saloon -- kids are welcome.

I'm sorry, we didn't do as much as we should have. We basically got out our binoculars and looked at the mountains to see the goats that others pointed out to us after they got back from their excursions. we spent hours in the hot-tub and pool with a precious lack of children on this day. we could see the mountains easily from the pool deck. they were gorgeous. i had planned to go to mendenhall glacier but cancelled it as made a dire mistake the night before: i wore new heels that i hadn't broke in and got blisters that left me hobbling that day.our friends took the bus over and had a good time. but they were back early too. We had no planned excursions here. As soon as you get off the ship & on the dock there are multiple companies offering shuttles & excursions.Mendenhall Glacier - We paid $16 roundtrip, on the dock. This was one of the better tour guides we had, very informative, I thought he lived there but it was just a summer job for him. The shuttle really drops you at the corner of the welcome center culdy sack parking area, very near the bear viewing area, we saw no bears but others did, we did see spawning fish, ducks, & 2 baby porcupines. My mother went directly to the welcome center  note, they do have a elevator up to the welcome center, she didn't know that & ended up walking up the ramp. Rest of the group walked around the lake area, saw icebergs & was able to pick a few little pieces up out of the water! We did the hike to the waterfall, I'm not in great shape & was able to do it (slowly), started raining a bit  the umbrella came in handy again. Rest of the time we walked around Juneau shopping, there is more to do in town but after the hike I was fine with just shopping. Tram  We dropped into this as we walked back to the boat, late in the day. I thought it was expensive. If I was going to hike around & use the trials, I might not have a issue on the price. It was rainy, but the views were still nice, it was also nice to see the bald eagle they have.Whale Watching - Since we're from Southern California I didn't even look into Whale watching, but some people on the ship did go & saw a TON of whales, I do wish we'd done it. I love Juneau! It is a very pretty town, with colourful buildings, and beautiful scenery. Take in the Red Dog Saloon for fun and entertainment, and Tracey's Crab Shack for delicious King Crab. Tip: you can take the city bus everywhere for next to nothing. We took the bus to get as close as we could to the Mendenhall glacier, walked for 30 minutes and were there. Not only was it great to get off the ship and have a beautiful walk, the price was $2.00 each! The locals were also more than happy to act as "guides" while on the bus. A fun, inexpensive excursion! This was our third time in Juneau. We decided to finally take our own whale watching excursion. We chose Rum Runner Charters to take the 4 of us out for a four hour trip. It was the most amazing part of our trip! Chris and his deck hand treated us like we were family. They met us at the ship and took us right to their boat in Auke Bay. We were one of the first boats out for the day, but they were still able to find us whales to watch. We came across a mom and baby feeding. We saw sealions and an eagle on a buoy. Then we saw 2-3 more whales, with one breaching right next to the boat. It was absolutely amazing! Our ride ended with lots and lots of eagles swooping down in the water to grab pieces of beef fat. It was absolutely incredible and worth every penny! After our whale watch, Chris arranged for a taxi to Mendenhall. We spent an hour there walking out to the glacier/Nugget Falls. The girls loved skipping rocks in the water. We then took a taxi back to the ship and had enough time to do a little shopping before getting back on board. Fun, fun, fun day! Read Less

Not enough time there!NCL was docked south of the main streets in town, but provided a shuttle to downtown. We took the shuttle bus to Mendenhall Glacier. You buy a ticket from anyone of the venders along the docks in the center of things. You board the white bus from the third lane where the tour busses stop. We had tickets for 9:30 a.m. & there were two busses to take people. Once there we walked to the waterfall. Beautiful! By the time we took the bus back, there was little time to do anything else. We had to be on board by 1. Read Less

Get the local bus to Mendenhall glacier for $16 return. Expect to spend a good chunk of the day here as you can hike, go to the view points, go to the waterfall and most importantly check our steep creek in rebar season. Be patient as after 1-2hour wait a bear came out to go fishing and we got to watch him for an hour. Lots of the tour will zip you through Mendenhall in an hour but I would do it yourself and really spend time here Read Less

Juneau was a great time. We did whale watching with Harv and Marv. It was so good the first time that I did it again the second week. We were fortunate enough to see bubble net feeding both weeks. The Harv and Marv crew is outstanding and Id highly recommend them if you want to experience the whales. After whale watching we stopped at Mendenhall Glacier viewing area for about 15 minutes. The first time it was a mob scene and I wasnt looking forward to doing that again, but the second week there was almost no one there and down one of the trails there was a BEAR eating salmon! I was psyched! Whales, eagles, and bears all on the same excursion! (wed seen eagles flying around the shore during the whale watching) The Red Dog Saloon and Alaska Brewing Company store are worth visiting if youre a beer aficionado. Lots of shopping here and the Tram to the top of Mt Roberts is worth it for the close ups of the eagles that make the treetops there their home. You can also hike down from the top of Mt Roberts and there were bear sightings reported from that hike. Read Less

Renting a car and striking out on our own was a good way to go. Things in Juneau are surprisingly spread out. Mendenhall Glacier on a nice day is a must do, and will take a couple of hours. The Mount Roberts Tram and hikes from the top were another significant part of the day, but again, we had great weather. We had a bit of a problem finding a suitable place to eat lunch and ended up in the Red Dog Saloon with our 11 and 13 year old girls. That might have been a mistake, but we all survived. Read Less

First view of Juneau is a shock! It is very touristy and all they seem to want to sell is tee shirts and expensive jewelry! Really ugly port-side! We walked to the state museum, which was quite interesting, then to the public library to sit in the lovely quiet space with a view, with free wifi. I really suggest you take a small tablet to stay in touch. It worked great for me. If you are up to walking, walk past the fakey area, to real Juneau! Otherwise, you will leave with a false sense of what Juneau is! Read Less
