We booked our own excursions, using this website and Trip Advisor and were really really glad we did.  We used a private tour guide in Jamaica named Walter Aarons.  He was fantastic!  He took us tubing, Dunn's River Falls and Margaritaville, along with several little stops that we requested.  We loved our day in Jamaica with Walter and can't wait to go back! You can find Walter Aaron Tours on the internet.  His email is Waltours@yahoo.com. We heard a lot of bad reviews about this port, so we were a bit concerned about what to expect. I had been to Ocho Rios before but not Montego Bay. We wanted to go to the beach, but didn't want to spend $60-$80 per person on going to a resort (Twice that if you book through Carnival) I did some research and found a beach called Doctors Cave. We took a taxi there for $5 per person. Then it was $5 to get in, $5 for the chair, $5 for the umbrella. It costs us $90 including roundtrip transportation, 4 chairs, 2 umbrellas. There are a couple of bars with waiter service on the beach. Heinekens were $3 and most sandwich/wraps were under $10. Beach was awesome, never got bothered or anything. Next door there is a resort, and if you want, you can rent jetskis, go parasailing, etc. There were some people snorkeling right there, and I saw 3 large catamarans stopping right in front of our beach so the snorkeling must be pretty good right there. After being in the beach for a few hours, we walked the street and saw some of the stores. Seen one, seen them all. Picked up a couple of souvenirs and took a cab back to the ship. We never felt in danger or anything like that. Perfectly safe environment, even with a 9 month old. Read Less

In Montego Bay we took a van to Doctors Cave beach. We'd been there before & knew it was beautiful & affordable. The umbrellas & chairs were much cheaper than Cayman, and the wait staff from the Groovy Grouper kept us stocked in beers. The kids had more fun snorkeling. It was a great day. The last time we were in Montego Bay, we went to Jimmy Buffet's Margaritaville, which is a short walk down the street from Doctors Cave, but we decided against that this time, since it was spring break, and we didn't want the kids to see anything too crazy. We didn't do any shopping in town, but it looked like the shopping center area, where the van dropped some shoppers off, was pretty good and safe looking. When walking down the streets in Montego Bay, we have never felt endangered, but it is a very poor country, and there are plenty of people on the streets trying to sell you things both legal & illegal. Just say "No thank you" and keep walking. We bought coffee at the port shops & it was much much cheaper than in Cayman. Read Less

We booked the Rose Hall estate tour through Carnival. We checked off the ship and those on the tour gathered in the duty free reception area. We boarded a bus with about fifteen other people. As we made our way through town, the tour guide showed us the points of interest and gave general information of culture, language, etc. Once at Rose Hall, we were assigned to a tour guide who led us through the site. This guided tour was very informative concerning the history of the building and people who have been there. Overall we enjoyed the tour and took a number of photos. The Witches Brew (alcoholic drink) was served at the end of the tour and was excellent. We returned to the bus and were driven back to the ship, stopping at a small shopping area for 20 minutes of shopping. We looked around at a few of the shops and did buy a small dress from one. The shop people were very pushy and not for the faint of heart. Personally, we enjoyed the bartering process and negotiated what we thought was a fair price for the dress. For the timid, I'd recommend staying on the bus! Once we arrived back at the ship, we did a little shopping in the duty free shops, purchasing some Appleton Special Rum at a very reasonable price and a few souvenirs for our kids back home. Oh, I did (male) set off the metal detector and was searched. I did not find the search to be intrusive... just a standard (see it all the time on police shows) pat down. Overall a good time and would recommend to anyone. Read Less

I had read and heard some really scary things about Jamaica, but we at no time felt unsafe. We took a taxi-bus from the pier (the ones with the red license plates!!) to Sunset Beach. The price had gone up from what I had read on here, but we had a safe, fun, and relaxing experience. There were very few people here at the time, which was nice because we had plenty of chairs, plenty of space, and plenty of time with the equipment. All drinks and food are included - everyone raved about how great the jerk chicken was, but it was a little too spicy for my taste! The burgers and sandwiches and drinks were all good though. The beach is beautiful!! We snorkeled pretty much the entire time we were there (my mom had never done it before and was blown away with all she got to see). There were lots of colorful fish and rock formations and even a couple blowfish! The same taxi came back to pick us up at a scheduled time. There was a driver as well as a "tour guide" - type person on the bus and they took us to some last minute shopping right by the pier and got us back with time to spare! Again, we never felt unsafe and never had anyone approach us or attempt to sell us drugs, though we heard stories about some of the other beaches. Read Less

$20 per person to get a few stops and beach. Better than what Carnival charged and encountered people from the ship that booked through them.

Jamaica wasnt my favorite. The people make it really hard to even want to visit, but it was still awesome. I was told that Jamaicans are always all up in your face wanting to sell you drugs and stuff, which is true. But they didnt bother my wife and I. Although there was one guy that was outside of the beach we went to, all he did though was try to sell me reggae music. Read Less

We did not plan anything for this stop. My husband and I honeymooned in Ocho Rios and knew about the 2 hour bus rides. I did not want to try that with kids. We got out and shopped in the port area. The kids got a Jamaica soccer ball (futbol); we did not have one before. We did not mean to but did haggle. Our youngest was trying to want a fidget spinner instead. We were trying to get them to decide. The ball also had marks on it; I don’t like to buy new stuff that is dirty. This was taken as haggling, and she knocked the price down. In the terminal, they were helpful and told us how to walk to the Hard Rock for wi-fi. We had gotten an email from our tour guide in Grand Cayman about an earlier tour time before we left Galveston, so needed to check email again. When I saw the line of people at the gate ready to hassle us and it was starting to sprinkle, I ask that we head back. (We ended up buying expensive one day internet access from the ship.) Jamaica was pretty when we saw it before; if you want to do something, book it ahead of time. It ended up flooding that day, and the ship did not get to leave until right before 10pm, instead of 6pm, waiting for ship tours to make it back. They had to avoid flooded roads. Read Less

Took the first shuttle bus from the cruise terminal and got off at Doctor's Cave beach for $7 each. Beach entry fee, 2 loungers and umbrella was $35. Beautiful beach with crystal clear water, soft sandy bottom and a really nice reef to snorkel a little further out. (Best beach of both of our cruises.) Good beach service with decent prices and good food. The beach became very crowded after the shuttle busses returned with all the people who took the full tour. Glad we had our loungers and umbrella as they ran out quick after the busses returned. Walked down the hip strip afterwards to Margaritaville and took a van back to the port for $7 each. There is nothing but security at the port facility. Had to show ID and Ship card three times to get back to the ship. Read Less

Doctor's Cave beach is beautiful and fun with lots of energy. The drinks at the Sand Bar are strong and reasonably priced, and the chair and umbrella rentals at the beach club are a good price too. Beware on the streets of Montego Bay, there's a lot of cabbies, vendors, shopkeepers, and drug dealers everywhere and they will swarm you. Keep you wallets hidden, don't accept directions or help crossing the street, people will expect tips from you or for you to buy something from them. We bought some jewelry from a man on the beach and some other souvenirs from a shop our cab driver had an arrangement with, everyone else we encountered was extremely pushy. Read Less
