Safe clean and pretty. This is a great place. We will be back. The American hotels are not in the best locations and the Turks know a lot of English.

We love Istanbul, but concerns security led us to go straight to the ship. Great views from there.

How often can you ply the waves separating two continents, Europe on one side, Asia the other. Pricey real estate bumps up against fortifications built as the ottomans closed the noose around Constantinople.

I liked this better than the Blue Mosque. It once was an Orthodox church and there are dueling icons of Christianity and Islam inside. Here too the centuries and several earthquakes have left their marks.

Stayed in Istanbul for a couple of extra nights after cruise finished. Ideal and very inexpensive way to get around is by tram. Grand Bazaar must be visited at least once although you need to have a good map to find your way around. Lots and lots of the same goods for sale, so take time to do a good search if there is something particular you are looking for. Do not buy the fake perfumes. Eating out is fun and lots of choice. Don't be put off by the people trying to sell you stuff in the streets around the Grand Bazaar. Sometimes if you haggle enough you can actually get a really good deal. Large selection of hotels around the centre and probably on reflection it would have been better to stay slightly outside the main hub and get the tram into town. Read Less

We entered just after services. It was crowded, and so we didn't really get to see much of it. A must see regardless.

It was a pubic holiday and all buildings and museums were closed until about 1pm so we strolled round the Sultanhamet area and went into the court yard of the Blue Mosque. When the Mosque and other places opened large queues had built up so we decided not to waste time in the queue and had lunch in a restaurant before returning to the ship. Read Less

Didn't get to Istanbul until 11 am so nowhere near enough time. Took the Princess shuttle bus into the city as it was a public holiday so not sure if the trams would be working. Istanbul was everything I imagined - the noise, smells and people everywhere. Trams are excellent & would recommend these to get around. Went to Sulemainye Mosque which was awesome and no queues. Also did the Blue Mosque and Aya Sofia but big queues for both. Didn't have time to do Bosphorus Cruise but definitely be back! The city was spotlessly clean and the only port where there were free public toilets! Read Less

We LOVE Istanbul. We booked three nights there and were so glad we did. It is a wonderful city where there is always something to see, some fun way to pass the day, just enjoying the beauty and then, in the evening, the meals are truly excellent. The Turks know how to cook. It is always best to go to dinner with friends and there are over 11,000 restaurants so the first 1100 are in the top 10%. You really have to spend time in this city. We opted to explore Istanbul on our own. It was very easy to navigate. I highly recommend Tokapi Palace and Hagia Sophia. We were not impressed with the Blue Mosque. While exiting the Tokapi Palace we happened upon a site that said it was free to enter. It was the tombs of the Sultans and their families. This was extremely interesting. I recommend stopping there. The underground Cistern was also interesting. We did not do the Grand Bazaar but opted for the Spice Market instead. What a sensory overload...lol. Read Less

Using the tram is an excellent way to see Istanbul, unless you have mobility problems - no need to use a ship's excursion as everything is very close together, the Blus Mosque, Agia Sophia, Topkapi. Tip - download instruction for Jeton Machines and Tram map and go to Tophane stop where there is a Jeton machine, left out of the port and a 5 - 10 min walk. The tram line runa along the middle of the road and the stops therefore are in the middle too. When you purchse the ticket, it is a red token which is used to enter the tram stop. It takes only 5-10 mins to the tourist center. Read Less
