Hanoi is just too far away for a visit. Once the new highway is finished, it will be a far easier trip. We opted for two tours one on UNESCO World Heritage's Halong Bay, surely one the most camera ready sights in the world. The next day we went to a Buddhist monastery outside Halong City where we took part (voluntarily) in Meditation session. Unforgettable. Read Less

We picked a tour with an independent operator (www.smiletoursvietnam.com) and did the Halong Bay Island tour for 8 hours, viewing multi-shaped rocks and visiting the Sung Sot cave. We had lunch on the boat (it was great !). In the afternoon, we continued the cruise passing by a fishing village,Tortoise island, Man's head island, Bo Nau cave, bamboo sampan row to Luon cave. In total, it was an awsome experience and 8 hrs tour versus de 5 hrs tour the ship offered. The price was also good (110 USD for 2 persons, compared to 298 USD - the ship's price) Read Less

The sail into port is stunning but it’s still worth doing a small boat tour to get closer and also see the Heavenly Caves which are beautiful and not nearly as strenuous as they make out. We took the afternoon trip which sailed out in daylight, gave us gorgeous sunset photos and returned to the port in darkness. Best of both worlds. Read Less

Loved Halong Bay despite the fact that they are building an amusement park right in the Bay. Did take a djunk cruise in the bay. Fantastic to see the islands and one of the caves

We did a half day cruise - again with Smile Tours. Halong Bay is beautiful and the trip through the cave as well as the small boat ride through a beautiful grotto are not to be missed.

This was possibly the highlight of our cruise. The geography is fascinating and beautiful, serene, and well worth whatever time can be spent appreciating it -- both the wonderfully lit caves and the karst islands.

Loved Ha Long Bay! We took one excursion to a countryside farm and to a beautiful Buddhist temple and loved it. The next day we toured the Monoliths - a world heritage site and it was breathtaking. Many of our fellow passengers opted to take the 12 hour excursion to Hanoi but I was glad we stayed close to Ha Long. It looks like they are building a huge theme part=k and a new airport, so this may be a much busier destination in the future. Read Less

This is a tender port. As we got off the boat, there were vendors for Jonk cruises everywhere. Once you agree on a price, they take you by minivan to the port for departure and take yo back after the cruise. We had a very nice 3-hour cruise of the area with a stop at one of the caves. Later in the day, we took a taxi to the center of town for $5 and explore the markets and the area. Beautiful scenery! Read Less

one and half days spent here, tendered into Bai Chay Tourist wharf. Worthing doing a full day Bai Tu Long and Halong Bay Tour. Some guests visited Hanoi, but the bus journey is very tedious and long.

We went on the junk boat tour organised by the cruise liner. I was excellent. Halong Bay is amazing, it was the highlight of the tour. There is no much else in the town, hiring a taxi for a couple of hours is more than enough.

Beautiful destination. Again, we joined an organized boat tour through Cruise Critic to see Halong Bay up close, including one of the caves with a huge chamber and interesting rock formations.

Enjoyed this. Transferred to a junk where we had a Vietnamese fish meal. Sailed through the amazing Unesco site to the caves. Interesting visit to the caves then sailed back to the ship.
