The weather was bad, but we enjoyed sightseeing along the way to Ha-Long and the boat excursion in Ha-Long Bay.

Did an independent tour: took an overnight excursion on the Aphrodite Luxury Junk Boat on Halong Bay. It was probably the highlight of our trip.

We went on the junk boat tour organised by the cruise liner. I was excellent. Halong Bay is amazing, it was the highlight of the tour. There is no much else in the town, hiring a taxi for a couple of hours is more than enough.

one and half days spent here, tendered into Bai Chay Tourist wharf. Worthing doing a full day Bai Tu Long and Halong Bay Tour. Some guests visited Hanoi, but the bus journey is very tedious and long.

First, Halong Bay is just as beautiful as the photos show, but not as sunny. Second, what the photos don't show is the armada of tourist boats that occupy the bay. There is one location where you can kayak into a bay surrounded by islands with the only opening being a large tunnel. Only kayaks and rowed tourist boats can enter. It's good, but the kayaking is bumped around by the speed boats delivering tourists to the rowed boats. Very close to this location is a large cave, with lots of steps, but an otherwise easy walk as there is a concrete path through the whole thing. Just don't expect to be out exploring the islands in peace. No reason that private boats couldn't go elsewhere, and maybe they do, but the main tourist excursions seem to all go to pretty much the same place. Read Less

This is a tender port. As we got off the boat, there were vendors for Jonk cruises everywhere. Once you agree on a price, they take you by minivan to the port for departure and take yo back after the cruise. We had a very nice 3-hour cruise of the area with a stop at one of the caves. Later in the day, we took a taxi to the center of town for $5 and explore the markets and the area. Beautiful scenery! Read Less

Loved Ha Long Bay! We took one excursion to a countryside farm and to a beautiful Buddhist temple and loved it. The next day we toured the Monoliths - a world heritage site and it was breathtaking. Many of our fellow passengers opted to take the 12 hour excursion to Hanoi but I was glad we stayed close to Ha Long. It looks like they are building a huge theme part=k and a new airport, so this may be a much busier destination in the future. Read Less

We did a half day cruise - again with Smile Tours. Halong Bay is beautiful and the trip through the cave as well as the small boat ride through a beautiful grotto are not to be missed.

This was possibly the highlight of our cruise. The geography is fascinating and beautiful, serene, and well worth whatever time can be spent appreciating it -- both the wonderfully lit caves and the karst islands.

The sail into port is stunning but it’s still worth doing a small boat tour to get closer and also see the Heavenly Caves which are beautiful and not nearly as strenuous as they make out. We took the afternoon trip which sailed out in daylight, gave us gorgeous sunset photos and returned to the port in darkness. Best of both worlds. Read Less
