Real freezing arctic wind conditions. Immigration took forever and then I got the shuttle bus into town. It dropped us very close to the station and the incredible "Morning markets". I have never seen such enormous crabs. Just as well Celebrity had a warning about not bringing seafood back on to Millennium. I was sorely tempted. Read Less

we arrived at 9am. Sunny and pleasant. It took 20 minutes on the free shuttle to town. We headed for morning market, helped by local school girls happy to practice some English conversation with the visitors. We got a bus/tram day pass ¥1000, but Mount Hakodate Ropeway was closed due to windy conditions. We visited the Goryokaku Tower (¥900), the citadel grounds (free) and the Magistrate Office (¥500). Free wifi was available in the area. We continued on the bus to the Red Brick warehouse area, rested at the Starbucks before heading back on the bus for more sightseeing and a ride up to the Ropeway station, which was still closed. The bus brought us back to the shuttle pick-up point returning to the ship. Never got to use the tram. Read Less

We did Hakodate on our own, we caught the ship shuttle into the town centre (JR Hakodate Station), where we bought an all day transport ticket (Y1000) and caught the bus to the Goryokaku Park and Tower. Best thing we ever did, as the Cherry Blossoms were in full bloom. (1 May). The queue seemed long to go up the tower, but went relatively quickly. What a wonderful view. We then caught the tram to the Motomachi area where there were lots of churches and historic areas to see and investigate we walked back along the river to the Red Brick Warehouses. Unfortunately we had planned to ge up the Ropeway to Mr Hakodate but visibility was nil, so passed on this, but this would be beautiful on a lovely day. Read Less
