Possibly my favorite stop on this trip. Seeing the Ghent Altarpiece was on my bucket list. It did not disappoint and St. Bavo's cathedral was also amazing. If you want to see the altarpiece, get to the cathedral when it opens and be first in line for the altarpiece. By doing this we were able to spend 45 minutes looking at it and reading all about it. Not very impressed but that was probably as we had so little time to explore. We hoped it would be like Brugge but not at all

If you have the option, I would stay in Bruges, one of the oldest towns in Flanders. See the Madonna and Child by Michelangelo, saved by the Monument Men. It's in the Church of Our Lady, in the Old Town. The town isa scenic network of canals. There was a half day for each city. Ghent is good, but the scheduling requires a decision. Read Less

The port of Ghent is a long way inland along a canal off the River Scheldt. The port itself is about 4km from the town. A very well organised bus shuttle (every 15min) drops you off in the middle of this beautiful Gothic Flanders city.

Straight off the Ship and onto the Shuttle Coach service. A short 15 minuted ride into the town centre in which we spent around 3 hours, Not a lot to see unless you are into photography.

A lot of the comments about the trips apply to all ports so I will say this only once. The knowledgeable and Slick tours team made joining the correct tour a pleasure with no hassle of finding the coach or queuing. The Ghent excursion was taken and our guide on the canal boat (Patrick)was excellent, unfortunately the same could not be said about the proper guide who could be confusing at times. Read Less

This tour we were still docked in Antwerp, which is centrally located for day tours to other cities. Our tour to Ghent and the Flemish countryside was again provided by our favorite George Depoorter. We drove into Ghent then walked around the city which is the best way to see Ghent. Visited the castle, the Cathedral and saw the Mystic Lamp painting. George again explained all the sites and showed us wonderful pictures and maps on his I-Pad, very great idea he had using the I-pad. Loved this city and all the sites again. It really helps to have a private guide, there was only six of us. We were able to ask questions about the sites and best of all how people live, their politics, their thoughts about the USA etc. George of course always knew where to eat and what beer to order. Loved everything about Belgium. Would love to return sometime. Read Less

Went to Brugge which we expected to love. Beautiful city but crowded. On the bus ride back to Ghent, our guide gave us great tips for touring Ghent, which we loved probably thanks to her guidance.
