Loved loved Genoa. Here we had the pass for museums and bus for 15 euros each. We went to maybe 8 museums. The red and white palaces near the tourist bureau were awesome. Four floors of marble stairs and paintings, like famous paintings and furniture to die for. How much money did these people have? Enjoyed Christopher Columbus house and then climbed the tower next door. The big fountain center of town also awesome and so Italian. Mac Donald’s near here if you need a burger or for us a bathroom. The royal palace also wonderful to see. Read Less

Spent 2 nights before the crusie in Genoa , a nice city , we took the ferry to Portofino which was beautiful, It took an hour and a half ferry ride stopping at all the small villages along the way , be careful where you eat In Portofino , avoid Delfinos restaurant , we ordered 5 pizzas and 2 bottles of water and the bill came fo 131 euros when we asked for a break down the pizza were 14 euros bit they charged us a sitting fee and service charge plus the waiter asked for a cash tip on top of that bill . The took advantage of us because we were Americans . Genoa is a nice walk around city the port is busy with lots of activities. You don’t need an excursion for this city . Read Less

We absolutely loved Genoa! We walked several miles seeing all sides of the city. My wife found an online walking tour. Started in some very narrow, dark passageways filled with shops. It wasn’t scary, just different. Eventually we came upon Christopher Columbus’ home as well as some castle relics. The buildings have such depth and character! My son was desperate to find beach sand at every port for a bottle so we went well out of our way in Genoa. Away from the tourists we found the real city and loved it. Climbed 174 steps for a great view, got yelled at in Spanish for accidentally trespassing on a beach, and found a beautiful pedestrian street for shopping and dining. Embrace Genoa. Read Less

Toured on our own to Portofino and Santa Margharita via train. Highly recommend Santa Margharita - Portofino is crowded, expensive and touristy while SM is a bit quieter (but still touristy). Great seaside meal in SM.

On our own, after exiting the port, we took a train and a bus to Boccadasse and spent a couple hours there - beautiful! Then we took a bus to town and walked for hours, finishing the day at the harbor area attractions.

Great little port, super interesting! Don’t bother with a shuttle bus into town, it’s only a 10 min walk. A gelato at U Gelato du Caruggiu is an absolute must.

GENOA: I love Genoa because it seems so completely Italian, especially in the historic center, which is a UNESCO world heritage site. Our ship docked in the main harbor in the middle of the city's waterfront -- an easy walk to almost any attraction and just a few minutes from the main (Principe) train station. Genoa is built on a hillside, so there is some climbing, but the waterfront alone has enough attractions to fill a half day for those with mobility issues. Pick up a map in the cruise terminal and exit right (east) along the waterfront until you reach the Galata Museum del Mar (Museum of the Sea). This is a large, modern, very enjoyable museum that is worth at least an hour or two when you are returning to the ship. See their website for hours and current prices. From the museum, cross the street and head uphill through the narrow lanes (gritty but safe) to the main street (Via Balbi). From there continue east to the Palazzo Real. There are five major palaces remaining from the days of Genoa's peak power and wealth. The Palazzo Real is the most interesting, but combination tickets are available, and it is fun to see more than one. From the Palazzo Real walk farther east to Via Garibaldi, where there are beautiful historic buildings and three more palazzi -- together called the Palazzi dei Rolli on the Strade Nuove, designated a UNESCO world heritage site. Combo tickets for the palaces are available at the nearby bookshop. The fifth palace, and the one with the most art is the National Gallery of Palazzo Spinola, on Piazza Pelliceria nearby. From there walk downhill to the cathedral and nearby fountain on Piazza de Ferrari, where you will find the Genova sign/sculpture for a photo op. The view down the historic Via XX Settembre is grand. It is an easy walk back west to the waterfront for either (or both) the maritime museum or the modern aquarium. Even if you do not enter the aquarium, there is a cute floating park at the end of its pier, with good views of the ship and the city. From the aquarium and maritime museum it is an easy walk back to the ship. Read Less

We did a hop on - hop off bus tour that was really good. A beautiful city and our favourite port. Just walking around and looking at the buildings was amazing.
