Our 3rd port on the cruise was Freeport, Bahamas. I was NOT impressed with this port. First of all you pull into a ship yard to dock. Not my idea of what paradise should look like. If you do not have a shore excursion booked here, do not bother getting off. There is no readily available beach when you get off of the ship. All that is on the dock is a straw market where the people were kinda rude and would heckle you. My husband, son, and Dad had a fishing trip booked for months at this port. They got off of the ship at 7:45 am to be told at 8:15am that the trip was cancelled due to wind and rough conditions. They understood, but it broke their hearts. Especially my 9yr old son that had looked forward to it for months. I will say that the staff on the dock were very accomodating by allowing them to join the excursion that my mother, my daughter, and I were going on. We had booked the Garden of the Groves and city tour. The first half of our tour took us to the Garden of the Groves. This is a beautiful place. However, I found the tour guide very boring. I would have preferred to tour it at my own leisure. This tour is certainly geared more towards senior citizens or people who are exteremely interested in information about plants and trees. Although my parents are both in their 50's and found this tour extremely boring. My mother was a floral manager in a grocery store and is an avid gardner and still felt this way. The second half of our tour took us to Port Lucaya marketplace. However, since we were with a tour we were only given an hour there. All of us were starving so of course the first thing we did was eat. That took up 20 mins so we were not left with much time to shop. Again...this is some place I would like to go on at my own leisure. All in all Freeport was not terrible but I couldn't help but wish we had visited Nassau instead. Read Less

Our stay in Freeport was limited to five hours instead of seven hours as the ship needed to leave for New York early again due to the Right Whale migration. We took the kids on the Dolphin Encounter tour and it was great. We needed to take a bus to the boat in order to get to the dolphin preserve, but it was well worth the trip. The kids and adults had a great time learning about the dolphins and getting in the water, chest deep, in order to pet and interact with them. We could not use our camera as it is not waterproof, but we bought the pictures from the tour company for a reasonable price of $10 per picture. Read Less

Freeport was nice to see, but I don't feel that I would need to go back there again. We got off midmorning and took a taxi to Port Lucaya Marketplace ($5 pp one-way). When he dropped us off, our driver informed us that we would pay him $10 each for round trip and he would pick us up in two and half hours. Just by the looks of the place, we could tell we wouldn't want to stay for that long, so we insisted to only pay for the one-way. He tried to tell us it would cost at least $35 to get back - not true. We paid $5 per person to get back, just like on the way over. There was lots of shopping to be done, mostly jewelry and clothing - typical cruise port stuff. We're not big into that kind of thing, so we explored the beach by the nearby Westin resort, and hopped a taxi back. Read Less

My husband and I decided to do the Lucayan National Park Kayak Experience at this port. Locating the meeting spot off the ship was a little confusing-I think they need to organize this a little better. As for the kayaking itself-wish I had a little practice beforehand. Actually, one couple in our group tipped and another couple in a different group did too. After a 90 minute trip thru the mangroves, we had a light lunch, which wasn't too bad, and went for a swim. Would have been a great day except for the fact I cut my foot on glass that was on the beach. Read Less

After getting off the ship in the Bahamas we took the advice of a previous cruiser and asked for Otis after being asked by a tour guide if we needed a taxi. Otis did a great job and for $20.00 a person we had a 2 1/2 hour tour of the Island. He was very informative. He had a nice van and also spoke very good English so you could understand him. He took us to all the well known tourist places on the Island. Although we did get a little tour of Atlantis we basically just saw the property and some of the public places. He gave people the option of ending the tour their and taking a taxi back to the ship. Although we went with him back to the ship I understand it is about a $4.00 taxi fare back. They also have a water taxi but it is a little walk to get to that from Atlantis. Atlantis is beautiful. He is the only Otis so when you ask for him they will direct you to him or have you wait because he does not get there until 9-9:15. Read Less

We did a lot of research on this port and couldn’t find much to do. There is absolutely nothing around the port itself, so we decided to book an all inclusive excursion to one of the local resorts/hotels. It was a little pricy, but we figured what the heck. This was evidently a very popular one, because they didn’t have enough transportation for everyone. The first bus left about an hour late and we were waiting for the second one. It became apparent the second bus was not coming anytime soon so I asked the Carnival Rep if we could get a refund because the entire excursion was scheduled for 5 hours and we were already into the second one. He was very friendly and understanding, our entire refund was credited to our account that night. The day was not a total loss though. We decided to take a taxi ($5.00 PP) to the Casino and Shopping/Resort area. I think this is the way to go. The casino was clean and modern; the shopping area was small but had some unique store and lots of good restaurants. After a few hours it was back to the ship to enjoy a bucket of beer on the lido deck, get some rays, and watch the new big screen TV that had been added during dry dock. Again, the weather was wonderful at this port. Read Less

For anything happening in freeport you must go to Port Lucaya, using the public beach between the Westin and Sheraton Our Lucaya. Having been to Port Lucaya, you had a good mixture of shops and restaurants to choose from. Stay away from the hotel restaurants as they are over-priced. Some of the nicest and quietest beaches are found on Freeport. Either rent a car or take one of the expensive tours to get here. Read Less

We arrived in Freeport at 7 am so we got up early and planned a taxi ride into Port Lucaya for some shopping. We were dropped off at 8:30 and found only 1 store open so in the pouring rain we just stood around and wondered why the other stores did not open early knowing that the ship was only here until 11:30. We briefly checked out the casino ( which did not open until 10 am) and headed back to the ship. Checked out the straw market near the ship and gave up when it started to rain again. Not enough time at this stop to really get to see anything. Read Less

Yuck! I think we went there to fuel up! This port was awful! The biggest disappointment was the lack of time at the port... about four hours so you couldn't really spend time investigating Great Bahama Island to any extent. So we opted on a one way $15 taxi ride to a hotel to sit on the beach for an hour and a half and play in the sand with the kids. Again, warm enough to tan, but surf too rough and too cold to go in the water. Be Careful to remember that taxi pricing is group pricing. If you make a mistake and miss your taxi, you could pay $30 or more for an 11 mile trip back to the ship. Be warned! Luckily we were with our group! Freeport was a sad way to end the cruise. Sort of disappointing. I wish we had done this up front. Great Stirrup Cay was the best day of the cruise. You sort of want your best experiences toward the end. Read Less

The weather wasn't too good, and our local snorkeling excursion was canceled. We poked around the Straw market at Lucaya, and didn't like it. We then walked over to the casino which we found to be smallish, but uncrowded and pleasant. We left early, and went back to the ship. The ship docks at an industrial port. There is only a tiny straw market, a store front gift shop, and a bar there. To get to anything, you need to be on a ship excursion, or take a taxi. Sharing a cab (shuttle) with a group costs about $5.00 each way. A private ride is $27.00 plus tip. If you only want to poke around the casino and straw market, by all means take the cheaper shuttle. I spoke with another passenger who rented a moped. He and his wife seemed to enjoy that. We didn't get to go snorkeling, or out to the national park. Read Less
