I would give Freeport/Lucaya itself a "3," but I would give our excursion a "5-plus." We took the guided Kayak trip to Lucaya National Park. It was fabulous!! We had an excellent/knowledgeable nature guide... This was a 6-hour excursion that lasted 8 wonderful hours! (We DID get back to the ship in time!) The excursion included kayaking thru a mangrove swamp, a stop at a very pretty beach, a short nature walk, and a visit to some caves. The lunch provided at the beach was pretty bad, I have to admit: sliced bread, low-quality cold cuts, PB&J, cookies and lemonade. I avoided the lemonade (tho' I would have loved some!) because the bees were ALL over the lemonade jug, plus they were crawling all over any cups that had even a hint of lemonade in them. We met some really nice fellow cruisers on our excursion, and it was pleasant to see them again on the ship from time to time. Read Less

Not a lot to see. Very industrial area where you dock. Have to take a taxi to downtown which is about a 30 minute ride. We just stayed at the port shops.

Freeport was nothing exciting. We took a cab ($5/pp in a van)Z to the main shopping area. There was some right at the port, but the one across town is better. There are bars and restaurants mixed right in. Had a great drink, good wings (ask for them with sauce on them!) and great bartender service at Rum Runners. Met lots of fellow vacationers. Walked across the street to the Radisson grounds and cut through to hit the beach. It was a beautifully clean beach area. If you wanted, you could lounge there for the day outside of the Radisson "service" area for no charge. Sat on the steps and watched some parasailing, etc. Asked a cabbie to take us to the brewery. He asked if we wanted samples, and we said yes. He then took us to a liquor store where they gave samples of liquor. Pretty sure he had an agreement with this store to bring tourists there. Then we went to the brewery, which wasn't doing much. Had a store, looked around and bought some shirts. Then went back to ths ship. Not a long cab ride, but it was VERY expensive ($60 for four of us). We felt taken. Read Less

Industrial Port. Really interesting if you get to see a cruise ship in dry-dock. Otherwise a tour is the thing to do. We have done ATVs and the island and shopping tour. They also have a nice casino if that's your thing.

Still a little cool for the beach but we shared a cab and headed for Lacayan(sp)Beach. The driver dropped us off right at the beach and picked us up in the same spot at the time we prearranged with him. The beach was beautiful but too cool to hang out there. We crossed the street to a shopping area with restaurants and a marina. A guy at the marina makes conch fritters with fresh conch 4 for a buck. He also sells the shells for $5. There is a lady that makes fresh pina coladas. If you buy the big one you get the small one for free. They were so good. In this area there are plenty of clean restrooms and places to eat. Be sure and do your shopping here because there is very little at the pier and it's more expensive. Have fun. Read Less

There is nothing located close to the port except for a few vendors selling the ubiquitous towels, t-shirts, and straw bags. We took a cab for 5 dollars per person each way to Port Lucaya for shopping and the beach. It was really too cold for the beach during our visit so we didn't stay long after finishing our shopping. I enjoyed a frozen banana and rum drink that was yummy. Hair braiding was available at several areas in Port Lucaya for 2 dollars per braid. Souvenir prices are somewhat higher in Freeport than Nassau - we were told it is because the vendors in Freeport have to get their goods in Nassau so there are added transportation costs that are factored into the pricing. We had no tour planned for Freeport and since we did dock in an industrial area we decided to take a bus (more like a van) to Port St Lucia. It is $5.00 per person each way and all I can say is it was an interesting ride both ways. It seems like some of the drivers not only disregard the safety of their passengers but try and cram 9 or 10 passengers in a van made for 7 people. Our driver going decided that the 5 cars in the front of her were going to slow for her so she started passing them even though we all could clearly see a car coming towards us, quite close. She barely made it back into her lane before the car whizzed by us. Then she laughed because she scared us and told us "no problem" she had it under control. The shops here were a higher quality than those near the port so we were glad that we had come. Beside there also was a casino that we went into to try our luck. I lost about $20.00 and my sister came ahead $37.00 not much but at least we had fun and could say that we had tried our luck at a casino in The Bahamas. While we found that the shop owners here where not pushy we could not say the same about the independent tour operators. They followed us around and would not let us alone. I finally at to tell them that No meant No and that if they did not leave us alone I would call for help. I think that on my next trip to Freeport that we will stay on the ship and read a good book. I am sure if you are a beach person you can find things to do here but since neither my sister nor I are beach people swimming or scuba diving is out of the question. Wednesday night our group had a Poodle Skirt Party with the Nik*L Beer Band and it was interesting to see every one come out with outfits from the 60s. Even people who had not even been born during this area got in own the fun and dressed up and knew the dances from our time. The band played well past midnight and since we were on the Lido Deck I had to feel sorry for the people at the Aft on Deck 8. Especially since that is why our cabin will be in September. But I spoke to someone the next day who just happened to be in one of those cabins and he said while he found it loud they did enjoy the music. Read Less

I gave this a low rating due to the fact that in order to get to anything from the ship you have to pay to get to the entertainment. Nothing is free in Freeport! Access to Freeport is difficult from the port simply because of the requirement to pay to see. I thought this was kind of a bad plan for Freeport because you would think they would want our business by providing free transportation. If you plan of visiting Freeport for shopping and nothing else, I would not recommend this port of call unless you want to pay to see shops. The cab fares were very expensive also. Around 20.00 I think. Definitely would plan an excursion here if you want to see any of freeport at all. Read Less

We did the Jeep Adventure while in Freeport and we had a great time. Freeport is not a very exciting island but what we saw was very beautiful. We saw lots of sites, different beaches, and we had a wonderful lunch at Garden of the Groves. This is advertised as a "light snack" but it was actually a choice of sandwiches, a bag of chips, and a beverage. Very tasty lunch in a gorgeous setting! We loved this. Taino Beach was beautiful, the Red Mangrove Swamp was something to see and if the weather had been better, this would of probably been our favorite part of the trip! Read Less

Our rating here isn't a reflection of Freeport, as we didn't venture beyond the shops at the cruise port shops. There was the usual assortment of souvenir shops, but nothing that left an impression.

We tried to book with Carnival, but everything we were interested in was booked quickly. We took a taxi, $5.00 pp to the shopping area. We ended up walking around and went to an area promoted as a straw market. We were told by the locals that straw baskets were the only souvenirs made on the island and they did the decorating. They were willing to barter in some of the booths. We walked to the beach to put our feet in as the water was too cold (70o) to swim. There is also a casino in the same area. There were some eating places, but we decided to go back to the ship to eat lunch. Our daughter and son-in-law with the ATV excursion through the ship and was totally ripped off. They paid $60.00 pp to ride a 4-wheeler around a field. There was no trails. Read Less
