Ship docks at the commercial port. Nothing there for the vacationer without taking an excursion or taxi/bus. On a previous visit we rented a car from the airport and were picked up at ship.

We paid $17 per person to be taken to Taino Beach, which is 25 minutes away, we were promised watersports. We got there, the beach was dirty and empty. Watersports offered were kayak, paddle boarding and jet skiing was extra. We asked for lounge chairs and were told it was $5 each but he negotiated to $2 each. We sat in the chair for minutes, a storm rolled in and we left. Paid about $100 for 15 minutes and didn't get a dime back. Not impressed with Freeport and wouldn't visit this port again. Read Less

Getting back on boat a nightmare. Very hot waiting on line at least 45 min. Buses pulled up as well as taxi's and those tourist cut the line. Only one security machine open for everyone. Had second which was not open. Should have had two lines, one for returning passengers the other for those who stayed in Freeport. Once through that mess, no direction as to where to go, there was another line for those coming onboard from staying in Freeport but no one told you that was what it was for. Read Less

As we arrived in port, there sat the Celebration - the first Carnival ship we ever sailed on, where they lost my luggage. It was nice to see it though - we had great memories of our 25th Anniversary trip. We could not get an accessible tour here so we wandered through the kiosks near the docks and then got a cab to Grand Lucaya Hotel and Casino. It took half an hour to get one and we should have passed on it because it ended up costing us $40 round trip - $10 each for us each way and $10 each way for the scooters. We explored the Grand Lucaya Marketplace and enjoyed the band that performed, but it was the same type of thing that you see all through the Caribbean, just marked Bahamas. We spent $20 in the Casino slots, winning not a thing and returned early. It was a good thing because it took 1-1/2 hours to get a cab again and we were almost late returning to the ship. Never again. Read Less

The worst port ever. If I ever book another cruise with the same ports, I will stay on the ship! If you go, be sure you get it in writing how much you are paying for taxi services. They will lie to you. I was told one price before I got in the van for a round trip to Port Lucaya. When trying to come back, I was told a higher price then the one we agreed on. Read Less

Fabulous if you like oil storage facilities and a power plant. The ship docked well away from anything else!

This was not a favorite. We didn't sign up for any excursions since we wanted to do some exploring. However, I don't think this is an exploring kind of port (or maybe I just didn't do enough research). There is a little area around the docks with food stands and trinket shops, but you basically have to take a taxi or shuttle to go anywhere else. We took a shuttle to Port Lacaya ($10 per person round trip), but we didn't think Port Lacaya was all that great. There is a some shopping, but it's all jewelry, cigars, and duty-free liquors - I don't smoke, I don't need any discounted tanzanite, and the ship's duty-free alcohol was cheaper. Maybe there were some better shops that we either just didn't see or weren't open (it was a Sunday morning). We tried to go see the beach, but a lot of the beaches within walking distance were the private property of hotels and were for registered guests only. We did find a public beach, but it was very small and rocky. We ended up just taking the first available shuttle back to the ship. ps: My boyfriend LOVED the conch salad from Robinson's Seafood. It's the blue food stand right by the dock area. Read Less

Freeport. Meh. Not sure why Carnival still brings us to this dump port when there are so many other places in the Bahamas to see and a few other ports to choose from. It's industrialized, loud, dirty, smelly and unattractive. Unless you get a cab and drive 45 minutes to the other side of the island for shopping (and I think there might be a casino?), it's not worth your time, you're only there for 6 hours. It takes just 1 hour to see all the little overpriced shops set up right outside the port docking aread but then you should just get back on the ship and enjoy the pool. This is, however, your last chance to buy last minute souvenirs and trinkets. These shops know this and their prices are outrageous, especially the shops located in the buildings. The outside vendors were a little more willing to negotiate and in fact, offered to discount the prices if they saw you start to walk away. I bought a lovely sundress from a very friendly man for $18, marked down from $30. And it was all his idea. I tried to negotiate with 2 other vendors but they wouldn't budge.Yes, there's a burger joint/bar, but you can save your money and get it on the ship. Some of the local vendors were just downright rude. Most were friendly and were eager to sell you their trinkets, even at a discounted price, but not all were that way. I asked one vendor to discount a shot glass I had seen a few shops down for less than half her price, but she snarled at me and told me no, so I put it down and went back to the other place and let her watch me buy it from the other vendor. She gave me the evil eye as I walked back past her to get back to the ship. So much for friendly native islanders! Read Less
