We took the Flam Railroad trip and enjoyed it. Itt is an all day trip but the scenery is worth the time. Lunch in Voss was not very tasty.

Took an excursion to Voringfassen falls, which is a must-do! The tourist information center had a map with a couple of hikes that were excellent. I personally loved the old 13th century church and the hike to the Viking burial ground.

We took the Voss to Flam railroad tour. It was great, except for four people on our bus who missed the train trip. When we were eating lunch (just ok), our guide told us to meet in two hours. She was adamant that if were were late, we would miss the train trip. Since it was raining, we just took our time during lunch. Good thing we didn't go exploring. After less than an hour, the guide flew into the room and announced she had made a mistake about the time the train left. We had to get up and literally run across the tracks. Four people on our bus had gone exploring. And yes, they did miss the train ride and had to be bussed back. Read Less

Waterfalls and Nature HAL tour. Our tour started with a drive up (about 2,700 feet in elevation) through the Mabodalen Valley. There are five tunnels enroute, including one with a 360 turn while climbing in elevation. Our first stop was at the Voringsfossen waterfall, which cascades about 600 feet. There was a very impressive metal and concrete pathway which gave one a variety of views of the valley and waterfall. Carolyn found a little troll outside the gift shop. We then proceeded to the Hardangervidda National Park and the Sysen Dam, the main reservoir for the Sima Power Station located near Eidfjord. The dam is about 2,600 feet long, 800 feet wide at the base, and constructed from stone, sand and gravel. The water is taken from the bottom of the lake through a series of pipes to the coast where it turns several turbines to produce electricity. Our final stop was at the Hardangervidda Nature and Wildlife Center where we viewed a movie about local animals, waterfalls, and the dam. We had noted many homes with grass roofs, but the nature center had two small goats trimming its roof. When we returned to Eidfjord, we decided to ride the local Troll Tram on a one hour tour of the city. In just a few minutes we were outside town watching farmers mow hay with John Deere equipment before coming to an overlook with a nice view of the ship and fjord. Further down the road were three rock burial mounds with the remains of more than 300 Vikings from around 1000 AD. Our tour ended back in town where we drove by the new church built in the early-1900’s and then stopped at the old stone church built in 1309. Our guide told us that there was a group who knitted sweaters for the trees along the waterfront. Read Less

Kayaking in the fjord was great. The guides did a good job keeping everyone on task, even those who have never kayaked before.

The views in this fjord and surrounding area were magnificent! We did the Flamsbana railway tour from here which did involve some long bus rides and an additional train, but the views were just fantastic. Beautiful scenery!

the flam railroad is the must do, highlight of the trip. The excursion offers more than described. It books up quick and many missed it which is the entire best part of this cruise. the boat did not dock in flam port - if it did you could do this on your own instead of the outrageous price of over 200 per person. So you can see how Viking milks you for every nickle and dime. it leaves a bad taste in your mouth to have to pay for something that you could do on your own but Viking made it so you can't ON PURPOSE.
