Easy shuttle transport from the ship directly to old town. Don't bother with the cabbies waiting outside. They tried to convince us we needed 2 cabs for our party of 5, so we waited 10 minutes and got a shuttle ride for free.

Our bike winery tour was cancelled. We decided to just go into the old town. Wonderful to just walk around and explore; have lunch at an open air restaurant.

Out of all the ports we visited this was the nicest. Again we did our own thing as we had seen there was a bus route from the port to the old city. As you come out of the port there is a small newsagent type shop which sells you a ticket for the bus for 12 Kuna, about £1.50. This ticket lasts for one hour and will take you on any bus. You then get on the 1A/1B/3/8 route to the old walls. When you want to come back you buy another ticket from a kiosk named bus tickets and come back on the same route. Really easy, hard to go wrong as the bus driver shouts out Port when you get there and the Walls are at the end of the route. Read Less

Take the shuttle as the Old City is a good 15 minutes up in the hills away from the Port. Lovely walled city full of charm, shops and restaurants. Once right through the city take a short harbour cruise in a glass bottom boat.

Dubrovnik - we had been here several times before and had no need for an excursion. The ship's shuttle was again €10 for the 3 mile journey to the old walled city. We opted to walk in (1 hour) and it was hillier than we remembered! There are also local buses running from outside the dock gate, but you need local Croatian Kronas for the fare. The old medieval city is as clean and picturesque as ever, but the prices are much higher than we recalled (progress!). They now charge €10 to walk around the walls. Having done it when it was free we declined on this occasion! Shopping in the old city is mainly tourist merchandise, bars and restaurants. We found we got better prices and more choice from the souvenir stalls back at the cruise port. Read Less

The next stop was Dubrovnik. Catch one of the regular service buses from just outside the port having changed some money first. The ride is cheap (and seems to be cheaper if you buy the tickets before you get on) but the buses are crowded and a bit uncomfortable. If you want to walk the walls (you really should) get there as early as you can or you will be exposed to the burning sun. Have a stop half way round to have an ice cream and sit by the heavenly fan. Don't be tempted to bail out half way round- the views at the highest point, furthest from the sea, are great. The town itself is lovely and lively. We bought a second ice cream as we were leaving the old town (it was a very hot day) - the shop near the steps where you probably came in is staffed by natural entertainers selling tasty ices for about £1. Buy one. Read Less
