We hired a private driver (Pero Klaic) who was recommended by Rick Steves. He did a wonderful job describing the past and recent history of Croatia as he drove us around the area surrounding the old town of Dubrovnik and showed us the sights. He took us to a small restaurant in Cavtat (a short distance from Dubrovnik) for a hearty lunch in a beautiful setting. We had several hours on our own to walk through Dubrovnik and "take in" The Pearl of the Adriatic. Absolutely enchanting! Read Less

We like to do our own thing in ports, not taking organized tours.Here we tendered, and one arrives to the very bottom of the old town. Extremely interesting and different. We walked around for a couple of hours,visited the local synagogue, and generally took in the sights of this delightful port call. After a few hours tendered back to the ship. Read Less

Another clear blue sky day, thank goodness. Took the ships tour which skirted Dubrovnik but took us to overlooks outside the city. Incredibly pretty and then to an Adriatic seaside retreat called Cafna?. It was unbelieveably beautiful, prettiest water we've ever seen, deep blue & perfectly clear. then a tour of the countryside & a light lunch at a hotel next to a babbling brook. Back to Dubrovnik for a brief walking tour of the city. Gorgeous 15th century buildings all converted to tee shirt and crap shops. Read Less

This was our favorite port. We took the tour to Cavtat which is rather a sleepy little town and not too much to do and see there. We were supposed to have a coastal cruise but as it was windy, the tour company provided instead a city tour. It was great and I am glad we did it. We decided to walk the walls as it was a beautiful day. They are open to walk from 9am-3pm. The walk is about 2km (just under a mile) and you can do half. We did the whole circuit and the first set of steps to get up to the top are pretty hard. After that it was fairly easy with a few stairs here and there. The views are stunning so I highly recommend it. There are some nice shops in the old city. Again the ship had a shuttle to and from the old city which was very handy. Read Less

We loved Dubrovnik - took ship shuttle up to the wall. We then bought our tickets and walked the entire wall, almost 2 hours. The views were amazing - it is such a beautiful city. We then explored the city - went to a small pier and walked everywhere. It is definitely a place that we would love to come back too. Read Less

what an incredibly beautiful port; a clean city with friendly inhabitants. we walked from the pier to the old city and back (do only if you like to walk). heard many good comments about the paid excursions). do not miss walking the old city wall! incredible views. The citizens of this city are to be commended; hardly any sign of war damage; friendly people; no graffiti; drivers that don't think it's a contest. we decided we would come back and spend at least one week here. The walk around the City wall is an absolute must for 10 Euro. Anyone with a disability can opt for the Cable Car which is 200 meters from Pile Gate. Make sure you take local currency or credit card as euros not accepted. This information not given to us by Costa. The ship provided a bus into town area. We toured the city walls, lots of steps and up and down! It is a charming town. It was overcast and after we came down and went to lunch it began to rain, fine but steady. We had planned to hang out at one of the cafes overlooking the sea but decided to go back to the ship. We went into the pavilion near the ship and bought some herbal brandy in an interesting decanter for a friend at home. Read Less

Dubrovnik is a beautiful city. Recommend paying the 10 euros to walk along the wall that surrounds the city. Most beautiful views of the sea that are breathtaking. All of the shops accepted the Euro. Read Less

The only thing worth seeing is the old walled town. It was extensively damaged during the war but has been almost entirely refurbished. It might have its charms, but we found it incredibly expensive. I would not go out of my way to visit this port. Read Less

Dubrovnik Wednesday 13th October We had had a very pleasant day walking around Dubrovnik. Gemeni Cruise ship "Happy Cruises" was in with us again. Also Thompson Spirit was there when we arrived. We walked through the main street and then walked outside the walls through the East gate. It was my intention to go up in the cable car, but Adrian had other ideas when he saw the queue. So we stayed outside the city, where we found a restaurant which took €. We sat for an hour or so admiring the view. Our day in Dubrovnik was rainy but we still had a wonderful time! We took a shutle into the Old City and walked the wall. This is a long walk and steep in parts but the views are amazing! Afterwards, we went to little cafe and had coffee and then went to a really nice candle shop. We just walked around in the rain after that and then sat down and people watched. If it was sunny out, this would have been an even better port. Read Less

All ports were beautiful. Adaccio in corsica was outstanding - Mediterranean as it had been twenty years ago. I could have jumped ship here. Dubrovnik - what a walk round those walls - outstandingly beautiful place. Barcelona - nothing to say, I would live there if i could. Naples - it was Sunday - don't even try to get the ferry to Capri. such a contrast from the year before when we there on a weekday in October! need I say anymore - getting stuck in the queue on the steps on the funicular railway station with hundreds of people in a sardine like crush - typical Italian crowding I suppose, but not for me! We were due to tender in this port but instead we were taken into the main harbour. On arrival there were coaches to take us to the old town, arriving at the Pile gate. obtained tickets to walk the walls 10 Euros per person, very hot need to take water and a hat although there are small cafes on the wall. Lots of steps but wonderful scenery, would not have missed it.I had been to Dubrovnik before so I acted as the guide for our party of four. Had a stroll around the town afterwards, visited a couple of churches, which are worth looking at. Taxis were available near the port exit. If we had more time would have travelled to Cavtat or the Arboretum, which is on the way as had been to both before. Read Less

It cost $5 dollars each one way for transfer to city walls. Although we would have expected complimentary transfer, we paid for the transfer for the sake of ease. Too far to walk for us. Dubrovnik is very much geared up to tourists. Cost of walking round the inside wall was 10 euro, so we opted instead for the cable car which cost the same. The cable car runs up the side of the hill behind Dubrovnik town walls, just a 5 minute walk away. The views on a clear day are fantastic. You get a great view of the whole of Dubrovnik town from here. There is also a small pleasant beach just outside the town walls. Read Less

Charming Cavtat and Dubrovnik. Cavtat was a complete waste of time when we could have spent more time in the wonderful town of Dubrovnik. Everyone felt the same. At Cavtat we were presented with a glass of orange juice and a dehydrated Fig, would have been better not to get anything! The most interesting thing there were all the lovely well looked after cats. WE caught the ship shuttle for 20 Euro each - expensive by the standards of the other days we did on our own but once again we had been unable to get the local currency and the queues we too long with the number of boats in port (4 big ships and 2 littler ships). We took the shuttle into town to the Pile Gate entrance. Dubrovnik is a unique and beautiful town. We walked the wall which had stunning views of the sea and the town itself. It is hard to believe there was a war here less than 20 years ago as it has been repaired so well. One of the locals showed us photos of his home when it was bombed. We really enjoyed our time here and got many lovely photos. We went to the beach after lunch for a swim. The sand was typical European sand - pebbly and not too clean but the water was very clear and we enjoyed our swim. A wonderful stop in a unique city. Read Less

Beautiful medieval city and definitely recommend the city wall walk from the west entrance gate. The walk gives some stunning views of the old city and should take about an hour to walk round depending on the pace. There are some steps to go up and down so those who are not in good health may suffer later! I would also recommend the cable car journey about a 10 min walk behind the city walls. Once you are up there take your camera for some breathtaking views of the old town coast and surrounding mountains. Read Less
