We pre-organised a bike tour in Hoi An. It was Christmas Day - the weather was spectacular. We organise a private mini van pickup at port through Mrs Ha at Vietland Discovery (who I have used before and they are great). They took us to Hoi An where we booked 6 hour private cycling tour through Heaven & Earth tours. We had a magical day. This was one of my personal favourites of our trip. You get to see the villiages of Vietnam up close and personal. Note that Hoi An is about a 1.5 hour drive from port. Read Less

Hoi An is a 90 minute bus ride from the port of Chan My through the city of Danang. The guide provided some interesting insights during the ride, and explained what the Hoi An Old Town was like - he also issued tickets to access 5 of the 'attractions'.There was the obligatory tour of a silk factory and embroidery workshop, then the guide took us the entrance point of the Old Town and left us on our own for about 4 hours. Most of the old buildings house commercial enterprises on the ground floor with many t-shirt and silk goods shops as well as many cafes and bars. The food in the cafe we ate in was very good, and very cheap. T-shirt prices depended on your haggling ability. There were some nice local leather-goods on sale, and lots of tailors looking to suit you up.The return trip was via "China Beach" and included a stop at a statue factory where they sold lots of jade ornaments and china bits and pieces (if you couldn't carry one of the 2 metre high stone carvings home with you!). Called at Nha Trang first. It was very interesting. Da Nang was another shuttle that had to be paid for. It is a dirty city but Hoi An was near by taxi and very nice.

We actually had 4 ports in Vietnam. The best of the tours for me was the CuChi tunnels out of Phu Myu, where we had an opportunity to understand the war from a participant's point of view. Saigon was also available but a long distance from the port. Da Nang is a wonderful busy city. In Halong Bay tours were offered to Hanoi and Haiphong which were tiring and of medium quality, while everyone raved about the caves available on a 3-hour boat tour right off the vessel. Read Less

Really horrible container port. There is a shop - some local goods but whether they are genuine or not ...! Outside the port, there are some very local shops - no apparent sign of taxis. Do not try to walk into town. It is a nasty road with no footpath and a very long way from the centre of the City. A note which we wish someone had told us - it is about 30 kilometres from Hoi An which is a World Heritage site. And is lovely. there are also fabulous silk shops there. They will measure you and produce the goods within a couple of hours - or even deliver to the ship. Take advantage - they need the custom, the goods are beautiful and incredibly cheap. Read Less

Next port was Danang – only one day in Port here. Our guide met us ( again from VietVision) 8 of us on this tour. This was a really good tour. We drove through the heart of Danang which we were really surprised at its size and modern buildings. We then stopped at a local village where we enjoyed a walk through and experienced the real life of Vietnamese people, the market and their food, they did not know we were coming which made it even more real. we went in a lovely old temple and had the elders greet us and give us history information. we then drove to Hoi An where our guide took us on a walking tour which was very interesting and then we headed for lunch at a lovely restaurant which was all inclusive of the cost. We then had time to ourselves where we could wander around and do shopping and experience this lovely town. We met up again for our journey back to our ship. This was a lovely tour and would highly recommend seeing a local village, most enjoyable. Read Less

I missed out on Nha Trang, but at the Danang port we visited Hoi An, a merchant town, and bought the usual fake designer polo shirts etc. Excellent local delicacies available in some of the restaurants, I would recommend trying them as well as the local beer. Some of the traders in Hoi An were a little insistent. A couple on our bus ordered shoes to be made, and we had to leave before they were ready. The girls from the shop chased the bus miles down the road in the pouring rain on their mopeds and flagged it down a few miles from the ship. Read Less
