The ship docks in a freight yard with nothing closer than 2 hours away making it impossible to go out on your own, forcing you to take a ship's tour which I almost never do.

We grabbed a cab with another couple that took us to the Lady Buddha, China Beach, and Hoi An. We stayed in Hoi An for 3 hours and the same cab brought us back. Wonderful.

We hired a taxi to go to HoiAnn. It was a rainy day but this was still on of the highlights. It is a bit over 30min but an easy drive. It is a very quaint little town bustling with markets and shops.

We didn't have fixed plans for here. I think we had intended to get the cruise-organised excursion to the heritage town of Hoi An but decided against it when we realised it would mean 2 hours in a coach there and back. So we decided to just go for it and emerged at Chan May port (it's pretty much a bunch of shacks) with no local currency and hardly any taxi drivers about! There was luckily one working ATM and we negotiated with a lady who could speak English was waiting outside the terminal. We agreed a cost of $45 for a return trip - maybe a bit expensive but we hadn't done our homework. The driver communicated with us via Google Translate. We paid him when he returned us to the ferry. Even with the taxi driver rocketing along the journey still took about 45 mins each way. The weather took an incredible turn for the worse (biblical thunderstorm) and with hindsight we were probably lucky to get back to the boat. The long beach area looked good (had it been sunny, not a monsoon) and we got some incredible bargains on trainers and sportswear. Read Less

Visited DaNang first and toured the Marble factory, then to the old town of Hoi An, a World Heritage town. Visited a silk factory, a Buddist Pagoda, had lunch and stopped at China Beach

We pre-organised a bike tour in Hoi An. It was Christmas Day - the weather was spectacular. We organise a private mini van pickup at port through Mrs Ha at Vietland Discovery (who I have used before and they are great). They took us to Hoi An where we booked 6 hour private cycling tour through Heaven & Earth tours. We had a magical day. This was one of my personal favourites of our trip. You get to see the villiages of Vietnam up close and personal. Note that Hoi An is about a 1.5 hour drive from port. Read Less
