Cienfuegos looks to be a resort town that has seen better days. We were given a bit of a rather worthless song-and-dance about the government-provided pharmacy, food markets, dry goods, etc. We were again treated to a pleasant town square (which would be a good place to purchase cigars and rum, had I waited). This city provided one of the highlights: Orquesta de Camara Concerto Sur-- A Chamber Music group of 8 musicians who were absolutely fabulous. Others on tour felt the same way. Hopefully, their future includes tours to other countries because the passion and skill in their music is amazing. Lots of other cultural treats made the visit interesting. Charming colonial/country city with a concentrated downtown walking area. Good guide with better than average English skills made visit meaningful. A second day trip to the nearby mountains and waterfalls with a local lunch was very pleasant. ...
I am so glad we got to spend some time in Cienfuegos because it is not only a UNESCO World site in Cuba with unique French influences, it has a wonderful Botanical Garden, a fascinating graveyard (La Reina), and is only about an hour from Trinidad, another well-preserved colonial town that has delightful restaurants, lovely cotton tatted cloths, and opportunities for great street photography. ...
