We had a private tour with trinidad sightseeing tours and our guide Ari was fantastic. However, we had to fight to get off the ship in time to meet our guide as RCCL contracts with tour companies that are owned and operated by the Cuban Government (so much for "people to people" support) so they get priority off ship, and in these ports everyone gets off the ship Read Less

Private Tour with Fer Tours. Very good. Would recommend them as well. Not as much to see in Cienfuegos but still worth a visit. We wanted immersion in Cuba to see as much as we could.

We took the tram that was at the port. It took us for about an hour’s ride around the town and to the lovely area of Punta Gorda with some beautiful old buildings. After that, we shared a taxi with another couple and went to the town of Trinidad. The cost was $70 for all of us, and it took a little over an hour to get there. It was an interesting town with some colorful buildings but not much else. There were some nice restaurants there and we had a very nice lunch at the El Dorado Restaurant. Read Less

Cienfuegos is more primitive and in the past. It appears to be quite poor. Many people use a horse and cart as their means of transportation. The tour was to El Nicho Waterfall, which was about an hour and a half drive from the pier. Our tour guide was wonderful, she answered all questions, and I learned a lot from her. The Waterfalls were stunning, but there were several large buses there which made for long waits climbing the falls. A family style lunch was provided with the tour at the Waterfall Property, and if you wanted vegetarian, they provided that too. It was a delicious meal, I chose vegetarian, but the other had Cuban pork that smelled amazing, the vegetables to share, rice, fruit plates to share, and soft drinks or water included. Some of us went to the bar for a beer and a wine, which cost 4.50 CUCS for both! There were two musicians playing guitar and singing in the dining area, it was so delightful and really added to the memory I have of that day! After leaving the Waterfall Park, we went to a “Cultural Project,” where students performed local dance, and there were several items for sale there. By the time we got back to downtown Cienfuegos, there was virtually 10 minutes to shop or look around. I managed to find a few pair of earrings I liked at one of the stands, and was able to look in a few shops, before we headed back. Then I found a set of 3 at the stall by the pier, earrings, bracelet, necklace-his prices were lower! Read Less

We took the Jagua Fortress and City Highlights tour. It came with lunch which was OK. Definitely really liked the tour and tourguide. Did not care for some of the other PAX on the trip. NOTE: There is some walking on the streets and in the Fortress, I would not do the tour if you can't manage steps in the Fortress or walking a few blocks on the city streets. There was a little time at the end to walk around the city center and do a little shopping. There are official Cuban Cigar stores near the town center, not a huge selection which is better in Havana. There are places to buy some soveniers from vendors on the streets. NOTE: This was a tender stop for us. There was an Oceania ship at dock when our ship arrived so no room for us at the dock. On our way back one of the tenders had engine trouble so it took longer to get out of the port. Not sure why however, at this location the money changer was very pickey and would not exchange any US bills that were damaged or had extraneous marks. In the official cigar stores they ONLY take Cuban CUCs. ALSO, I believe that RC gave PAX who booked a shore excursion with them preference in boarding tenders. Read Less

Trinidad had a lot of walking on uncomfortable cobblestones, but included a nice dinner at sunset. Havana trip was mostly spent on the bus getting there and back, but getting to Havana at all was the highlight of the cruise. Read Less

We booked privately with Viajes Vintage Tours. They met us promptly - driver and guide. The car was vintage with a diesel engine. We couldn't put down the windows because of the smell and it seeped into the car. I think that is the standard. We drove out to El Nicho Falls and had a wonderful hike and climb. It is absolutely beautiful there. There is a restaurant on the premises but we did not eat there. If you go you can swim in the natural pools. Honestly, not much to see in Cienfuegos other than skinny dogs and horses, dilaptadated buildings and such. There is a mororish house under repair that is a restaurant now and that was architecturally interesting. We did not get off the ship day 2 there. Read Less

We booked a private guide that drove us to Trinidad for a tour and then back and took us on a tour of Cienfuegos. It was extremely interesting but don't expect to see beautiful buildings and nice roads. The whole place is dilapidated and run down with about 40 years of neglect. The people however were friendly and very happy to talk to you. They have undergone such a dreadful life limiting time - they are looked after by the government but can't do as they might wish as they have minimal free will. They are living in such basic and very cramped conditions but they know no different. For example, we saw only two pushchairs in our whole time in Cuba. It's an unnecessary and unaffordable luxury so they carry babies and young children everywhere on the extremely uneven roads and pavements (where they exist). Read Less
