The city is a World Heritage Site. We walked into town, went into some famous buildings, went up and down some malls with lots of souvenir stands, and took a horse-pulled cart back to the pier.

vefore we went to Cienfuegos, we stopped in Casilda which is a very smal port near the city of Trinandad. Cienfuegos was very nice. We went on a walking tour of the City, saw the old theater, had lunch at a Paladar (privetly owned home with a "restaurant"}and learned the history of the City, I believe that Jose Marte was from there. Before we stopped in Cienfuegos we spent the previous night in Casilda, a very small port that most cruise ships would not be able to get into. From there, we went to Trindad which is an agricultural area a lot of people still get around on horses and donkeys. Read Less

Our favorite port because it's beautiful and much cleaner and newer. It's an easy walk to the central plaza with lots of bars, restaurants and shops. Be sure to visit the beautiful opera house on the plaza. We visited the adjacent school next door to drop off a bag of pens/pencils/crayons and another bag of toothbrushes for the children, which were gratefully received. We dined at a nearby paladar called the Dona Nora, which we highly recommend. We sat at a breezy balcony table and enjoyed the house special, the braised lamb, which came with a beautiful vegetable array, rice and beans and mixed veggies for 8 cucs. Flan and chocolate mousse were 1.50 cucs each and a 15 year Cuban rum was only 6 cucs. Read Less

The botanical tour had a great guide. The former Harvard forest area was great, with an enormous variety of plants. We saw a lot of rural Cuba from the bus. Horse carts, bus-trucks, mopeds, revolutionary art, government housing, etc. The cultural tour had a fine choir singing Cuban music. The singers and musicians were very proud of their craft. The guide seemed to be new, and was not the equal of the others Read Less

We booked a private guide that drove us to Trinidad for a tour and then back and took us on a tour of Cienfuegos. It was extremely interesting but don't expect to see beautiful buildings and nice roads. The whole place is dilapidated and run down with about 40 years of neglect. The people however were friendly and very happy to talk to you. They have undergone such a dreadful life limiting time - they are looked after by the government but can't do as they might wish as they have minimal free will. They are living in such basic and very cramped conditions but they know no different. For example, we saw only two pushchairs in our whole time in Cuba. It's an unnecessary and unaffordable luxury so they carry babies and young children everywhere on the extremely uneven roads and pavements (where they exist). Read Less

City tour that included a visit at a local art co-op. Due to visiting on a Sunday, only one artist was there and with out group and another group from the ship there at one time it was impossible to look at the art work they had for sale. Our guide was French and hard to understand while on the bus and impossible to hear once off the bus and walking since she had no mic and didn't bother to gather people around when she was ready to say something. Hubby & I left the tour and roamed around and met back at the bus when she had indicated we would depart for the ship. Cienfuegos is a flat place and the farest we were away from the ship was about 4-6 blocks. The excursion was very poor and definitely not worth the price being charged. Luckily we had an excursion here included in our cruise price. Read Less
