Went off on our own, which included a visit with the woman (and her family) who is the head of the tiny Jewish community in Cienfuegos.

We booked privately with Viajes Vintage Tours. They met us promptly - driver and guide. The car was vintage with a diesel engine. We couldn't put down the windows because of the smell and it seeped into the car. I think that is the standard. We drove out to El Nicho Falls and had a wonderful hike and climb. It is absolutely beautiful there. There is a restaurant on the premises but we did not eat there. If you go you can swim in the natural pools. Honestly, not much to see in Cienfuegos other than skinny dogs and horses, dilaptadated buildings and such. There is a mororish house under repair that is a restaurant now and that was architecturally interesting. We did not get off the ship day 2 there. Read Less

The botanical gardens were disappointing, but I just decided it was what Cuba is. The staff at the gardens were wonderful.

I am so glad we did this stop. I was a little worried we were going to have to skip it as it is a hard port to navigate and the captain had come on board the night before telling us all issues with trying to reach this port. We did a private tour to Trinidad that was fantastic. Our guide was great and we got to see a lot of Trinidad and the countryside between Cienfuegos and Trinidad. I fell like we got a good sample of "real cuba". Read Less
