We did our own trip on the Kuranda scenic railway. This was easy to book on the internet direct. We also purchased tickets for the sky rail to return back down to Cairns. There is some souvenir shopping and cafes in Kuranda. We thought 1-1.5hrs would be enough for us there and proved right. ...

You cannot put "CAIRNS" as a port of call when you tender into "YORKEY'S KNOB" they are two different cities with a distance between them. The tendering into port was a horribly long 3 hour process. The tendering back to the ship was even worse with 3 hours of waiting in a long line in the HEAT!! On top of that NCL should have provided the transportation to "CAIRNS" the port actually listed.
