Tour bus ride to Kuranda. Tour guide was a local school teacher, and very good. Kuranda has a large covered shopping area with lots of crafts, etc. to buy. Butterfly exhibit cost extra. Not enough time to really shop and see very much. Duck ride in rainforest was interesting, again with a good guide. However, time constraint again did not alow any extra time to even buy a local-flavor ice cream after the ride. Aboriginal show was OK. Tour really needs to be longer to give people a little more free time. Read Less

This was to be the highlight of our cruise with a full day excursion booked but this port was cancelled. The reason given was that the ship couldn't reach its maximum speed to reach the port on schedule. This was suspicious as we managed to make all our other ports on schedule. It would have been better if they missed Alotau. Instead we spent days floating around in the ocean with very little to amuse us. Read Less

We booked online before travelling but P&O didn't have our booking - Hamilton Island all trips were cancelled it was bad wether, (not ships fault) Cairns - we arrived 6 hours late after circling at sea as captain said winds too high to get ship into port - locals said there was no wind. The ship was so old it probably didn't have modern equipment like side thrusters so allow us into port other than perfect weather. Typical, we in Austral get dumped with the crap the no one else wants. Read Less

It docks off shore from Yorkeys Knob, 20km north of Cairns and the timing makes it completely impossible to plan your own shore excursion, so you should take this into account if taking this cruise as it will probably cost you another $100 pp extra to book the Great Barrier Reef tour ($250 each) through the cruise compared to if you went to one of the many local operators direct. A good option is to pre book a rental car through Gem Rent A Car who are based in Yorkeys Knob and will collect and drop you off at the wharf. Read Less

Tendering 15 minutes ride from the dock meant a bit of time lost travelling into port then there was the $20 per person to use the shuttle bus for the 20 minute ride into the city centre that added some salt to the wound. Being Boxing day it was very busy and so this made the day less enjoyable however we can now say we have been to cairns. Read Less

Yorkey's Knob. (tender only) Quite a drive into Cairns or there are tours (very expensive) if required. Stopping a bit nearer Cairns would have been better. Unless a tour is booked stay on the ship.

You cannot put "CAIRNS" as a port of call when you tender into "YORKEY'S KNOB" they are two different cities with a distance between them. The tendering into port was a horribly long 3 hour process. The tendering back to the ship was even worse with 3 hours of waiting in a long line in the HEAT!! On top of that NCL should have provided the transportation to "CAIRNS" the port actually listed. Not make the passengers pay. Read Less

Not the ship's fault, but we could not get our helicopter ride to the Barrier Reef. (tto see it again). Walked around Cairns---not very interesting.

There is no waiting room for this cruise terminal, just a cafe down the dock. When driving to the dock, there are no signs to direct you.

Not enough time left as only those who paid the extortionate cost were taken off ship early enough. Tenders were too big. Did not allow for handicapped people.
