Yorkey's Knob. (tender only) Quite a drive into Cairns or there are tours (very expensive) if required. Stopping a bit nearer Cairns would have been better. Unless a tour is booked stay on the ship.

Christchurch: For Christchurch the port of Akaroa stands in and this beautiful port has amazing scenery. Located 1.5 hours east of Christchurch this little village was settled by the French and used to be a whaling port. This was the only tender port on the trip and I quite enjoyed the experience. For this port I did the 'Arthur's Pass Scenic Drive and Transalpine train ride. This tour was amazing, the scenery from the train windows is stunning and the last carriage is without glass in the windows so you can take photographs. The meal served onboard the train was excellent. Once the train ride is over (a couple of hours) you take the bus back to Akaroa stopping in at Homebush for afternoon tea. Homebush is an estate (working farm) that used to have a lovely big house that was unfortunately destroyed in an earthquake. The gardens are still there and are lovely, as is the homemade afternoon tea that was served; well worth the visit. Read Less

I didn't have any high expectations of Cairns. I thought it might be a bit of a redneck city but I was pleasantly surprised. It was far more sophisticated than I imagined and seemed to be a Mecca for backpackers and overseas tourists. We walked up to the main shopping mall, met some distant relatives there and had a coffee. We didn't do any of the tourist things or excursions here, they are quite expensive. But we checked it all out as we were coming back here on a P&O cruise two months later. That afternoon I walked up to the huge marina for a good look around and to take a few pictures. ROTS is the largest ship to ever dock in Cairns. I later learned that there's only a one metre clearance below the hull here. Read Less

Tour bus ride to Kuranda. Tour guide was a local school teacher, and very good. Kuranda has a large covered shopping area with lots of crafts, etc. to buy. Butterfly exhibit cost extra. Not enough time to really shop and see very much. Duck ride in rainforest was interesting, again with a good guide. However, time constraint again did not alow any extra time to even buy a local-flavor ice cream after the ride. Aboriginal show was OK. Tour really needs to be longer to give people a little more free time. Read Less
