I didn't initially think much of bodrum, but after walking through town along the water to get to the castle and exploring the castle (we must have spent a good 2-3 hours there!), we really enjoyed it. It houses the underwater museum (and I don't think I ever really FOUND the underwater museum, but when I looked at my entrance ticket, it said it was for the underwater museum -- either that or she gave me the wrong ticket) and a bunch of other small museums full of interesting artifacts. You're a bit at the mercy of when the "guard" (person overseeing the small room/museums) take a break, but they will reopen again if you come back later. It also has fantastic views of the city itself from the castle outer wall -- my parents and aunt/uncle skipped that part, but I think it was one of the better parts of the castle. We took the free shuttle (which was not publicized on the boat) back from the castle (there is a pier right outside the castle) to the pier where our ship was docked. It goes back and forth from the cruise ship dock to the castle, so if you don't want to walk through the town, you can just take the shuttle back and forth. One note, however -- they will only take lira at the castle (entrance fee), so if you're out of lira, walk through town and exchange your money there -- they don't charge a handling fee/commission either. Bodrum is to me the Magaluf or Benidorm of Turkey. Nothing to recommend here for me. Trashy shopping, crappy food and bars.

We were unlucky with the weather which was cold and wet. Plenty of shopping in the bazaar. Not sure whether we did well in the bargaing stakes but it was fun.

We finally caved and did some shopping (the first time I've been served tea while haggling over the price for a belt) but mostly we were glad to get back to the ship. Read Less

We took taxi into centre by market. Disappointing, however we walked on and came across waterfront with cafes and mixed shops again you couldn't fault the welcome from the local people.

Unless you do a tour we couldn't find much to do here. Literally took a walk and stopped for lots of coffee. There is a castle and museum and a harbour.

Just walked along the esplanade to the souk and shopping area and then on to the Gulag marina. Got some good leather sandals etc after bargaining.

Bodrum was a nice change of pace after touring for two days straight. We walked to St. John's Castle (the archeological museum) and wondered about there for a few hours. We stopped at a (highly overpriced) restaurant right on the water before heading back. Changed into our swimsuits and went for a swim in the very rocky beach right next to the ship port. Read Less

Bodrum was a small Turkish portside village. We took a ship excursion called the Blue Voyage. We went to Camel Beach on a Turkish boat called a gulet. The beach was very forgettable. Rocky beach with cheap plastic beach chairs-rattan umbrellas painted blue with paint chips all over the place. Second stop was more fun where we coved out and swam. The boat owner gave us a history lesson (rather lengthy) and politically pleaded to not hold Turkish Muslims responsible for 9/11 or other extremist occurrences. Turkish shopkeepers will drive you nuts. Shopping not enjoyable. Read Less

This is actually a beautiful port city. Kind of a sleepy little tourist town with lots of hotels, restaurants and more street vendors. The main tourist spot is the castle on the opposite end of the bay from the port. We walked along the bay to the castle and it was a pretty easy and quick walk. The castle is actually more impressive than it looks on the outside. There is a lot to see and some great photos to take from the top of the castle. I know there were some guided tours, but we wandered on our own and still had a great time. We went about lunch time and the person at the ticket booth warned us they would be closing in the next 20 minutes. We took the challenge and tried to do the short tour. We ended up doing a longer tour and no one ever shuffled us out of the castle. The great part was there were not many people. Others on our cruise went on a guided tour before we did and they said it was incredibly crowded. Not for us. On the way back to the ship, we shopped a bit more along "hustlers" row. We also decided to try a traditional turkish bath. We just ran out of time for the Delphi hotel, which would have been great and the right price. We opted instead for one closer to the port called the Bodrum Diamond. A great looking hotel and the bath was certainly an experience. A little pricey but something that we wanted to try. Read Less
