Bergen Steam Railway  One-way train ride only. Quite an anticlimax. No catering or shop made available. Norwegian guide leaflet has about 25 words of English. Pricey at £60 each.

We had been in Bergent touring independently about 10 years ago-we liked the city and hiked the residential areas above the funiclular whichwere quite interesting. Also visited the Hanseatic Museum and the former stock exchange in the center which is now a series of restaurants but retains the excellent 1920 murals. The fish market was interesting with typically expensive scandanavian prices. Read Less

We booked an excursion, but decided to go on our own through town and up the Funicular. Our other ports (not listed on pull down menu were): Leknes, Norway; Honningsvag, Norway; and Molde, Norway.

Bergen is a lovely town and quite easily seen on foot. We happened to be there on 17 May, which is Norway's National Day, so most shops and museums were closed. The funicular to the top of Mt. Floien is very fun and on a sunny day the view from the top should be spectacular. No need to purchase any shore excursions in Bergen. The town is an easy 5-10 minute walk from the pier, and many of the more popular sights/museums are within walking distance. With the alloted time in port, there should be plenty to do on your own. We had a printed walking tour but could never find where to start it. Regardless, we greatly enjoyed walking through the old town area of Bryggen and seeing the leaning buildings. We also rode the funicular up the mountain and took lots of photos of the outstanding views. The weather was very “Un-Bergen.” It started off partly cloudy but as the day went on the sun won the battle. After riding down the funicular we began a mission to spend our remaining Kroner. We eventually settled on a couple of pewter items at a shop that would gladly split the payment between what Kroner we had left with the balance on a credit card. We walked through the park near the port on our way back to the ship. While enjoying a small rest on a park bench we had a nice conversation with a passenger on the RCCL ship that was with us in Flam and Bergen. He shared how a month prior he was on a land trip in Norway and while he greatly enjoyed it, cruising is a much more cost-effective way to see the country! Read Less

We did Bergen on our own. We'd been there before & knew we wanted to take the tram up Mount Floyen and walk back down. The gift shop has a free map of trails on the mountain.

The weather was shocking. wind, rain and fog! So we didn't see the town never mind walk around it!! We had booked a walking tour, however, it would have been very unpleasant and uncomfortable to walk in the weather that day!!

Luckily we've visited Bergen before and we recalled being in a different docking area. We were 'all aboard' for 1.30pm and did an hour round trip walk and got back on the boat. We didn't get to see anything.

I'd recommend doing the cable car on your own. It's in walking distance of the ship and a lot cheaper
