I loved the town center of Bergen and would like to go back someday to spend more time there. We did an independent boat excursion that took us to the end of a smaller fjord. So much beauty!

Used a local guide to tour this lovely city on the morning before we set sail. Took the cable car up Mount Fløyen on a very worthwhile trip watching MS Nordlys sail into harbour before we boarded.

It was unfortunate, but expected, that it was pouring down rain on this day! Still, it was a great tour.

Bergen is a true city with lots of character and would be best enjoyed over a few days. The Bryggen area is quite interesting and worth a visit when not overrun with tourists from the large cruise ships, and there are a number of well-rated shops and restaurants around that area sprinkled among some very horrible souvenir shops. The old fort is also quite interesting to visit and hosts the largest beer festival in Norway (featuring only Norwegian beers), which happened to be going on while we were in town. Also, I can highly recommend taking the funicular railway to the top of the mountain overlooking the city, then walking through the woods to a small lake and then down the hill back to the city (which is only a few kilometers and does not take much time going down - maybe 45 minutes at most and not a difficult walk since much of the way is paved or over nice trails, but good shoes are recommended as it can be steep in places). There are a number of wonderful restaurants, galleries, coffee shops, clothing boutiques, museums and nearby scenic destinations that are not-to-miss (including the home of Edvard Grieg and the Flam railway). We loved Bergen and thought it was a bit edgier and more true/gritty of a city than Oslo and some of the smaller and more picturesque cities and fishing ports we stopped at along our journey. As long as you get clear weather this is a great port. Ten minute walk from the ship to the city centre and 4 minutes more to the funicular up mount floyen. Yes there are queues but the view is well worth it. Bryggen and the fish market are must see areas and quite relaxing to explore. We returned to the ship for lunch as eating out in Norway isn't cheap. Read Less

Another fine day marred by unpredictable weather. Views from mt floyen are great and the hanseatic buildings near the port are beautiful.

Rained for most of the morning as is the norm in Bergen. We then took the funicular after the clouds lifted before walking round the old town.

We didn't go here on the cruise but flew to Bergen after the cruise ended in Copenhagen. We loved Bergen! There was a Tall ships race starting while we were there. Did a fjord cruise, walking tour of old town including St. Mary's, went up Mt. Floyen, ate really good fish then took the train to Oslo which I highly recommend. Read Less

The only issue here is the time spent in port as it was well too short for a stay as I wished it would have given a longer time as we were note able to walked and enjoy the town as we had hope for. This place had a lot of shops and Food hall as well the market which we could have tried some local cooking but due to the time - we could not. The trip to the top of the mountain via a cable train was great as we saw the cloud (we were above it) coveringt he city but the fog clear and we saw the area. The hike down from the mountain was agood hike as we pass forest and house along the way back to the ship. Read Less

Don't book a ship tour. If you want to go to Mr. Floyen, you can book a ticket in advance and save a lot of money (https://www.floyen.no/en).
