We docked some 600 metres from the town centre; closer than on a previous visit. Our 2 hour, 23 tour 'Introduction to Bergen'(?) was good, especially for those of limited mobility. We were lucky with the weather, as it rains here 3 days in 4, and we had none. Like all places in Norway, prices are very high; most things seem twice the UK price.   Read Less

Our next port was actually Kristiansand, but it is not on the list! Bergen is also very authentic Norway, lots and lots of shops (catering a bit towards tourists but the kids loved the Norweigian pewter, swords etc). Our dock was a short walk to downtown. Excellent tourist centre near harbour. We took a train/tram to the hills and then walked 20 minutes to the home of Grieg, Trauldhogen which was lovely. I wanted to see a genuine Stave church nearby but the kids were by then too tired to walk another 20 minutes there and back from another train stop. We did walk about 3 km that day. The walking available at Northern European ports is amazing - often easy hiking trails pretty close to dock (within 1 km). Read Less

Last port is Bergen. The weather is warm again; a beautiful 25 degrees. We do our own thing in Bergen; no excursions are booked. This works out well for us as we still get a Cunard coach ride into the city. We wander aimlessly through the city; lots of shops! We take the funicular ride to visit Mt Floyen. A great stop for kids as there was a brilliant troll park in the woods at the top of the mountain - kids could have hung out there for hours. Bergen is a picturesque city - photo worthy. Highlight for me was the shopping! Read Less

Again fantastic views as you cruise into Bergen. We didn't hold out too much hope as we docked in a commercial port, but were pleasantly surprised when we we bussed into the town free of charge. On arriving we caught the local hop on-hop off bus (15 Krone)around the town. Bergen is a beautiful town with its finicular railway, parks and harbourside markets. Well worth a visit. Think carefully before you go for your cup of coffee/meal as prices are rather high so wait until you are back on board..... Read Less

Since we had been there before, we went off on our own. Our primary goal was to ride the funicular: what an amazing view! Interestingly, it's also used by commuters as well as tourist. Language is not a barrier in Norway. Be prepared, however, for very high prices. (Food off the ship is particularly expensive.)Nevertheless, the Hanseatic League era shops are definitely worth seeing. Read Less

This is a very nice city with parts of the "old town" right at the docks. Most of the really good places places of interest such as the Flobanen Funicular, Bryggen's Museum, Hanseatic Museum, The Fish Market and the Petroleum Museum are in easy walking distance. You might consider the hop on hop off service which takes you around a larger area. A Bergen Card which provides some discounted or free admissions can be purchased across from the Fish Market, but you may not have enough time to visit enough sites to make it worthwhile. A trip to Troldhaugen, the Stave Church or Grieg's home are excursions outside of Bergen that should be considered. Read Less

We did Bergen on our own. We'd been there before & knew we wanted to take the tram up Mount Floyen and walk back down. The gift shop has a free map of trails on the mountain.

Lovely place for nice walk. Went on the ships tour which consisted of a short bus tour around the city and a trip on the venicular railway. Both were worth doing although you could very easily do this trip yourself.

Another beautiful place. We didn't book an excursion here because of the size of the place. It was possible to book a trip to go up the funicular of Mt Floyen, however we didn't book this as we had read that it was possible to do it yourself. We got off the ship, picked up a map in the tourism centre and we walked to the funicular, only about a 20 minute walk from where we docked. We beat all the coaches there that got stuck in traffic and only had to wait about 15 minutes before we could go up. When we came back down the queue was huge as lots of coaches were arriving. Spent the rest of the time looking around the shops and the traditional buildings. A lovely place. Read Less

A most absorbing place to visit and lots to see and do. Norway IS expensive, but we all knew that when we decided to go. But it is the only place where we have used bank cards to pay for bus fares and coffees! (Coffee and cake x 2: over £15.) We did not take local money as we were not sure how far it would go. We visited numerous of the Norwegian ports so sadly they can't be covered. Bergen has the charm of Scandinavia and is very walkable. See it all in a day and 1/2.
