There is not a huge amount of things going on in Bergen, a UNESCO World Heritage site, but the shopping/market in the old wooden buildings is a great experience, with quirky shops containing everything touristy, from fridge magnets and snow globes, to Fox stoles and moose heads. A number of passengers recommended the Ice Bar, where everything therein was made of ice, but it sounded a costly experience. Read Less

Ship sailed only a few hours after we got to Bergen due to Dorian. We did the Oslo pre-cruise (Hotel Thon Opera ideally located), then train to Bergen.

While we were supposed to be there two days, fringes of Hurricane Dorian necessitated our leaving the evening we boarded. Disappointing not to be able to see more of Bergen, but necessary.

I loved the town center of Bergen and would like to go back someday to spend more time there. We did an independent boat excursion that took us to the end of a smaller fjord. So much beauty!

Used a local guide to tour this lovely city on the morning before we set sail. Took the cable car up Mount Fløyen on a very worthwhile trip watching MS Nordlys sail into harbour before we boarded.

It was unfortunate, but expected, that it was pouring down rain on this day! Still, it was a great tour.

Bergen is a true city with lots of character and would be best enjoyed over a few days. The Bryggen area is quite interesting and worth a visit when not overrun with tourists from the large cruise ships, and there are a number of well-rated shops and restaurants around that area sprinkled among some very horrible souvenir shops. The old fort is also quite interesting to visit and hosts the largest beer festival in Norway (featuring only Norwegian beers), which happened to be going on while we were in town. Also, I can highly recommend taking the funicular railway to the top of the mountain overlooking the city, then walking through the woods to a small lake and then down the hill back to the city (which is only a few kilometers and does not take much time going down - maybe 45 minutes at most and not a difficult walk since much of the way is paved or over nice trails, but good shoes are recommended as it can be steep in places). There are a number of wonderful restaurants, galleries, coffee shops, clothing boutiques, museums and nearby scenic destinations that are not-to-miss (including the home of Edvard Grieg and the Flam railway). We loved Bergen and thought it was a bit edgier and more true/gritty of a city than Oslo and some of the smaller and more picturesque cities and fishing ports we stopped at along our journey. After all the other beautiful places Berfen was a bit of an anti-climax, personally I think it would be preferable to start in Bergen but appreciate, with sailing times, it may not be practica. Bergen port is a working port and ugly, you need to catch a shuttle bus to reach the port entrance. By and large this worked effeciently with minimal queuing, although later on there were queues to return to the ship. The town itself is pretty, although quite easy to get lost in. The funicular is the main attraction however the queues to board were horrendous there were two cruise ships in that day. The Bryggen area of the town with its painted buildings is also popular but crowded and most of the buildings are tourist traps in an slready expensive country. The fish market is worth a visit but you may need to take out a bank loan if thinking of buying anything. Read Less

The weather di not fully corporate for the view as we had a lot of rain and fog for this mountain top view but I think if the view had been clear on a good day it would have been remarkable

As long as you get clear weather this is a great port. Ten minute walk from the ship to the city centre and 4 minutes more to the funicular up mount floyen. Yes there are queues but the view is well worth it. Bryggen and the fish market are must see areas and quite relaxing to explore. We returned to the ship for lunch as eating out in Norway isn't cheap. Read Less

Our xcursuoj was cancelled and n this port as a storm was due to hit the uk and we had to leave Bergen early. We had a wander but although a busy port, not much to do with limited time.
