A very nice port. We had a pleasant walk-around. We would have liked to go up the mountain `Funicular train' but felt that we didn't have enough time.

BERGENHaving heard glowing things about Bergen, it was a bit of a disappointment, but this is relative when one is cruising the Norwegian fjords and every vista is breathtaking. Here, the first thing we did, frankly, was head to the public library to be able to access WiFi, as my teenagers were going through withdrawal! We never purchase internet packages onboard, as they are very overpriced and even more importantly, we enjoy the respite from constant technological interactions. The old wooden warehouses and shops in the Bryggen, with tight little alleys between them, were interesting to walk through, and we strolled through the Fish Market to see all that was on offer. The queue for the funicular (which was the main attraction) was long all morning. apparently it eases up around 1.00pm so worth waiting a bit before going for it. All food and drink stupidly expensive (how do the Norwegians live) but we had some smoked salmon from the fish market with some lovely rolls brought from a local bakers and a picnic with local produce is worth making an effort to get a real taste of Norway (our cruise had no Norwegians options at all) Read Less

The city is very walkable. We enjoyed the Hakon Hall and Rosenkrantz Tower (ask for a tour in English). We walked the Bryggen area and the Fishmarkt. We started to climb up Mt. Floren but turned around about half way up for lunch in the Fishmarkt. We enjoyed some fresh seafood (king crab and whale) in the Fishmarkt but it was pricey. Following lunch we rode the light rail out to see the Stavekirke. It is a replica of a stave church moved to this site some time ago. It was a questionable value. Read Less

The port is very near the city centre, its easy to get there on foot. Went up the funicular to Mount Floibanen on the funicular first thing in the morning, 11ish. There were no queues, easy ride up, had a great time at the top, wondering about the rural tracks and seeing Bergen from the top. On the way down, about couple of hours later, we could see long queues, waiting to go up. Go in the morning! Lots to see without a tour. Read Less

Bergen is the "big city" of this cruise, and an excellent introduction to Norway. We decided to do what we wanted, which included riding on Bergen's new "Bybanen"or Light Rail Transit system. We did the Hop-On-Hop-Off bus tour, then had coffee and pastry in the Magdalena Cafe (a lovely mission run by the Norwegian State Church, which offers free WiFi with your coffee), and visited the main square and shopping center, where we purchased tickets from the transit authority (SKYSS) office for a ride to the end of the line. (Confession: Torontobert68 is something of an LRT nerd.) We ate lunch in a suburban shopping mall. It was an opportunity to see life as the locals live it. The day ended with a shopping trip to the Bryggen, the medieval merchants' street. Not an itinerary you'd find in the tour books, but we enjoyed it immensely. Read Less

We found the city to be very easy to negotiate on our own. Because the port did not allow any outside transportation in, there was a bus which took us to a central point and served as a shuttle. It worked well, and made frequent trips back and forth. We bought tickets for the Hop on-Hop off bus (there were 2-3 different companies that were virtually the same). The Tourist Info was quite helpful with this. We also rode the funicular to the top of the local mountain for an overview. I felt there was no need to have booked any other tour, unless you wanted to visit places outside of the city. We talked to people who took a tour to fjords nearby and really enjoyed it. The exchange rate here was very much against our favor (about 5 times our dollar at the time), so we did not buy any souvenirs. Read Less

Weather wasnt great, but the town was busy with a small market. We started heading up the hill to where the funicular goes up the mountain but gave up at about 5th of the way up as it started pee'ing down LOL

A Pretty town in Norway. We took the free shuttle bus to the city centre and managed to take the city hop on and hop off from there. We stopped at the Fish market for a few photographs and sovenirs before taking the Floibanen up to the gorgeous Bergen city view point. There are some gorgeous views of the whole city from up there. After which we took the whole hop on hop off around the town and got off to spend the remaining hours at the Fish market. Towards the end of the day we did realise that taking a hop on hop off is useless in this tiny town. Alot can be accomplished on foot alone. The hop on hop off buses do have free wifi which is an additional boon. Read Less
