Lots to see without taking an excursion. The funicular is well worth doing and the views from the top are excellent. Make it your first stop as soon as you get off as the queues can be very long.

Did Bergen on our own. Very easy to get around. If doing the Floyenbahnen, get there early/first thing.

Bergen is the 2nd largest city in Norway after Oslo. It was a beautiful sunny day in a normally rainy city - we were told it was the warmest day of the year. We did the hop-on/hop-off bus. We waited in line for the funicular - the line moves quickly. Some of us decided to book a one-way ticket and take the 45 minute walk down. The views from the top are beautiful - there are even resident goats. We weren't in port very long, so felt kind of rushed - there are some hikes and walks you can do that we didn't have time for. If you are in decent shape - the walk down is nice. It zig zags, so isn't particularly steep, but can do a number on your knees. When we got to the lower sections, we were able to take stairs to cutoff some time. We also walked around the Fish Market and the Bryggen area, which had the best shops. Read Less

Docked in a container port so had to take a 3 min coach ride to the dock gates and then followed the arrows into town. Very nice port to walk around.

We booked tickets for the funicular in advance. There is a lot to do at the top -- hiking trails etc as well as all the views. Then just walked and looked in the old buildings along the waterfront. Unfortunately the time in this port is very short and it required taking a shuttle bus from the ship to the downtown area which subtracted even more time. Read Less

This was a funny port because they provide a free shuttle bus to the centre of town and it seems really great - until they drop you just outside the port gates. Apparently that is the centre of town, lol. Then you walk the rest of the way. It's a reasonably short walk though. We visited the fish market - lovely and colourful and then went on to see Bryggen. Again, this is just a lovely old city - lovely winding streets and old buildings. You could get lost happily for hours. We had another stupidly and unexplainably short stop here so that was very disappointing, but the port itself is fabulous. Read Less

Another port where you can walk around in the town or take the funicular up the mountain for fabulous views.

Bergen is an interesting city to visit and quite compact for walking around. Can recommend a visit to the Fish Market on the harbour (inside and out) and, if feeling energetic, take a trip on the funicular to the top of Mount Floyen and after spending some time at the top walk down through small woodland then past the modern and old wooden houses (allow about 40 minutes for the walk). We bought ticket to the Funicular online. I recommend you to do so as the line was very long at the ticket booth which we skip to where you get to the cars. But that itself was a very long line too. Then we went to the fish market to have seafood. We had the mix plate that cost 200.00 Euros and only the oyster and lobster was good, others are not fresh at all. What a rip off! Read Less

Lovely port for walking at your own pace. Everything is pretty close to the ship. The Bryggen hanseatic wharf, outdoor cafes, the fish market was a highlight.

Did Bergen on our own using the Hop-on, Hop-off bus, which was a lot cheaper and more convenient than the cruise operated shore excursion. Lots of shopping in Bergen as well.
