Way too far by coach, should us the train system. The coach back was like a zombie coach until we arrived at the port when all the zombies could sense food & shot off before everybody else, ie 4 passengers!

We disembarked in Beijing, prearranging for a tour company to pick us up along with 2 other couples. It's a 2 hour drive into the City, which we traveled through on our way to the Great Wall at Mutianyu. It wasn't very crowded at this location on the wall. We took the cable car to the top of the wall and walked as far as allowed (about one hour). Our guide was very informative. The next day the same tour company picked us up at our hotel for a trip to the Summer Palace (well worth seeing), the Temple of Heaven, and Tiananmen Square. We were supposed to also go into the Forbidden City but ran out of time so just walked along outside, poor planning by our guide who should have skipped the obligatory stop at the Silk Factory and hurried us through Tiananmen Square more quickly. We stayed in the Hutongs in old Beijing and enjoyed wandering the alleyways at night, shopping and eating in less touristy locations. Read Less

Definitely a place where you need at least 2-3 days. Add onto the beginning or back end of the tour but take the time to see all the great things about this city. Climb the great wall at a minimum

This was not really a port as we were not on the ship yet, but I loved touring this city. Unfortunately you see only the highlights but it's not Viking's fault as you have only so much time at each destination. For instance, we spent maybe 2-3 hours at the Summer Palace but literally took a quick walk (and boat ride) through the establishment, not being able to see within any of the structures. One drawback of being in a tour is you spend quite a bit of time just standing in one spot either listening to the guide. Read Less

Amazing place to visit. The access to the Forbidden City and the ability to walk on the Great Wall were very memorable. We also had marvelous accommodations in the Financial District.

Gloomy weather is expected but we were lucky to get a sunny HOT couple of days. The Drum and Bell Tower are good to hit. If you can walk up only one (there are lots of steps) make it the Drum Tower. These towers are how they told time in ancient days. The Tianamenm Square is impressive. Lots of people there. The rural Chinese may stare at you as you may be the first white people they have seen! Be careful about taking pictures of anyone in uniform. I wish The Forbidden City still was! Very long walk through-after the first bit of history I found it boring. Take your guides advice on shopping as there are some very aggressive folks there-even worse than Rome! Drink bottled water and take hand sanitizer. Also toilet paper!ALWAYS go in to a WESTERN toilet-you might fall in otherwise! The Great Wall is magnificent! Go early as there are always crowds.Best buys on jade there! You can also get your picture taken as an Emperor/Empress! Terra Cotta Warriors are awesome. It is so much more than can be seen in pictures. Go early and you will have much better access to the on going archaeological dig. This was the highlight of our excursions. Read Less

We arrived a day ahead the 3-day Princess Pre-Cruise Tour so we spent it walking to the nearby Silk Market, China World Mall, and grocery store. We had great weather and it was very easy to walk around the hotel. Princess Tour Day 1: Tianammen Square, Forbidden City, Jade Factory. All very interesting but the Jade Factory was more for shopping. Princess Tour Day 2: Great Wall of China was the highlight of this trip for us (Bucket List Item #1 for Asia). The Summer Palace tour and boat ride in the afternoon was relaxing. Princess Tour Day 3: Heavenly Palace and Silk Factory were in the morning with a long 3 hour bus ride (one rest stop) to the Port to get on the Diamond Princess. All went smoothly. Note: Our main tour guide on Day 1 had a death in the family but his protege step right in and took over. Very informative and efficiently run tours. Read Less

The ship docks three hours plus by road away from Beijing. Passengers can take one of the shore excursions, arrange their own tour through the many local agencies offering Beijing tours, or team up with fellow cruisers via cruise websites. It is also possible to get to Beijing by bullet train and this is quite achievable, but if possible, it would be good to go prepared by having someone skilled in Mandarin write down a request for the appropriate number of return tickets to Beijing from Tianjin down for you to show at the ticket office as you may not find anyone who speaks English. If going to Beijing, an overnight tour is recommended. Read Less

We booked a private tour with The China Guide.com which was very reasonable. The guide was good and we were able to visit more attractions than the HAL excursion.

I strongly suggest you spend at least one night in hotel in Beijing and then have 2 days to do the important sights and get in late the second day. We had come into Beijing several days early so did not take a tour with Oceania in this port. We did however see the Great Wall, Forbidden City, Summer Palace, flew to Xian to see the Terra Cotta Warriors, which is a must see!!!

There is not enough time to visit the Imperial Palca (long queus at the ticket office) and not enought time to visit the "Great Wall" unless on an expencive overnight tour with H-A. (around USD 2000,.. or more )
