The drive would have been 6 hours round trip so we decided to stay on the ship. In actual fact, we had had enough of the Sapphire Princess and needed a day to recover so that we could be ready to return home in a few days.

This city is very congested but more orderly than Ho Chi Minh City. Travelling on the Chao Phraya River in public boats was fast and cheap. Sometime we were lucky and got seats; other times, we barely have space to stand. We bought our tickets at the pier. The ticket is the size of a stamp and the conductor will come around and check it. This route is not recommended if you have mobility issues because the boats are not steady and you need to move fast getting on and off. Travelling on the skytrains was also fast and cheap, though not as cheap as the riverboats. You need to tap the train ticket going and coming out of the station. If your destination doesn’t correspond to the ticket (i.e. you got off one station further away), you need to pay the fare difference before you can exit. Read Less

I had been to Bangkok recently, so I didn't want to take the trek there and be in a hurry. I had not been to Pattaya so I concentrated on this area. My big disappointment with this port was the location and transportation options. It took almost 2 hours to get to Pattaya the first day (it was New Years Eve, so maybe more traffic), and it was slow and painful. I took a bus that is sponsored by a mall, and it was 1/4 the price of HAL's shuttle which also came back to the ship really early for an overnight stay (last shuttle at 430). This bus wasn't so bad, it had AC and it placed us right in the middle of Pattaya's shopping and beach area. So, from there, I had ideas of going to the Sanctuary of Truth, to the Floating Market, to the Nong Nooch Gardens. I was on the first shuttle, then had to buy a SIM card, and after that I took a Grab taxi to the Sanctuary of Truth (bought a ticket on Klook and saved some money). This stop was amazing, I really enjoyed it. The staff there was super nice, they saw that I walked with a cane and had a driver take me down the hill to the temple and dropped me off right at the little temple elevator- which was super cute and made of wood. I didn't take a guided tour, but just walked around the temple inside and out, there were staff members that liked to point out things, educate me about the place. From the covered cafe I watched the poor elephants taking tourists around, and had some coffee. Then, I realized by checking taxi times, etc, that I really did not have time in the day to be able to see any other hot spots and then getting back to the shuttle in time (530 was the last mall shuttle). Traffic here is so bad, and the Grab price back to the ship was $50. So, i spent the rest of the afternoon walking the beach in Pattaya, looking at stores. The second day I just didn't feel I was up to the hassle of the shuttle then taxi plan. So, I guess if there is a place at this port you really want to go to, consider an excursion, or just don't set your heights too high on seeing much if you want to take the shuttle. Otherwise, if you have seen one Thai beach town, you have seen them all, Pattaya town could just be Phuket for all I could tell. Read Less

We took the shuttle bus into town and spent the day shopping and eating. This was our first taste of Asian food since leaving Singapore. We enjoyed our day, but I would recommend hiring a driver to see a lot more.

Spectacular! This is 2-3 hours from port, so we got a hotel room (Asanti Riverside, which was amazing). Arrival time was 11 am (but you will not get off of the ship until between 11:30-noon, as it was very slow getting cleared and always is), this was a real bummer and I have no idea why RCCL is so short sighted on this. It should also be on a Saturday and at 6am (or Friday if you have 2 days like we did) so you can see the best floating market (the one available during the week is either in Pattaya (not real, more of a tourist trap) or way out of the way and 3 star at best). We hired a guide who provided a driver (tours by locals) for both days and it was worth every penny. So much to see and it is very hot so an air conditioned van really helped. We also saw way more than we could otherwise with a local. We saw the Grand Palace, Golden Buddah, Emerald Buddah, Reclining Buddah, Canal Ride and some other temples/shrines. Read Less

March 7, 2019 Laem Chabang NCL Jewel South East Asia March 4, 2019 While the nearest city is Pattaya, our plan is to visit Bangkok which is about 130 Kms away. What makes this port (Laem Chabang) a challenge for cruise passengers: - There is nothing in the vicinity of Laem Chabang to visit - The sun and heat is intense - There is a very large number of aggressive taxi drivers waving excursion flyer in your face - GRAB (the UBER equivalent) may show a cheaper rate to Bangkok 1,460B (CAD 61), but will show all drivers busy. Busy making more money from cruise passengers. Once all passengers are off ship and left, you might get lucky with GRAB. - The gate is over 1km away, in the middle of nowhere and there is a 400B (CAD17) fee per vehicle coming to the Port, through the gate. Not going out (as one taxi driver tried to discourage me, claiming that I would pay 400B if I walk to exit the gate - hence taxi is cheaper after the gate). - Trying to find transportation outside the gate is equally challenging, as the nearest life form is about an hour's walk from the gate. - Traffic is insane in Bangkok, as our taxi ride leaving at 10.15am ( on Thursday) from Port to Giant Swing (Bangkok) took 3hrs 25min. Our return journey to the Port leaving at 11.30am ( on Friday) took 2 hrs 30min. - Unless you have already booked an excursion, or a taxi ride, your option is to fall in the hands of some opportunist taxi drivers at the Port. I had previously declined an online offer received a week prior, from a reliable taxi service for 1,500B + 400B entrance fee (CAD$80), thinking that I could do better. We finally found a couple who was in the same situation to share the ride. At that time, many of the taxis have left and the cheapest one we could find is 2,500B (CAD$105), as most were just interested in excursions. While the ship docked at 8am, we arrived at the Giant Swing in Bangkok at 1.40pm (Half a day wasted). Good thing that I have booked an Airbnb close by, as our ship leaves the next day at 4pm. The SIM card I purchased a day earlier in Ko Samui worked perfectly well. I had booked a Tuk Tuk hop on hop off, online for 1 day, ideal if you are new to the city, and stay in the centre of attractions, e.g, Wat Pho, Golden Mount, China Town etc. Tuk Tuk operates from 8.30am to 6pm and use their app (hence wifi a must - they will also rent a wifi box) to capture your location, the nearest pickup location, the time of your pickup, and your intended destination. The app is relatively simple to use, and that means of transportation is just perfect, as (1) no need to bargain for taxi or TukTuk, (2) unlimited ride for the day, (3) an overhead cover to escape the intense heat, (4) you can see on the app where your ride is and how long it will take them to meet you and (5) they know exactly where to drop you off. Children under 100cm free, if travel with a paying adult. The cost is 1 passenger 399 Bhat 2 passengers 599 Bhat 3 passengers 699 Bhat (CAD$30) Our first TukTuk stop is to Saphan Hua Chang (River boat stop). We took the boat going West for 10B (CAD $0.50) Per adult (children free). You do not need exact money, as the operator will return you change. This is an interesting boat ride. We got off Phan Fa Lilat Terminal (last stop) and cross the bridge to Golden Mount. Entrance is 50B (CAD $2) Per adult and you climb 244 small steps to get to the top of the Pagoda. Great place to take pictures of the city. Tuk Tuk to Wat Pho, world famous Reclining Buddha. Entrance fee 200B (CAD$8.50) Per adult. A site not to be missed. Tuk Tuk to Grand Palace. Unfortunately, it was closed at 5pm when we arrived. Tuk Tuk to China Town arriving at 6.10pm. It was a pleasant adventure to walk along the different streets in China Town and savour the numerous food stalls. The city came alive and buzzing. Lots of fresh seafood sizzling on the BBQ. The aroma was just too much that we finally gave up authentic Thai food and chose seafood instead. Fresh and so good Bangkok is indeed a great destination to visit. People are courteous and welcoming, proud of their rich culture, splendid architecture and cuisine that you instantly fall in love with. All combine to offer any visitors an unforgettable experience.
