A large city with lots of history, again fascinating, but lots of stores were closed because it was Monday!

Unfortunately I have to rate this as average because we missed out on seeing any of Avignon due to a conflict in scheduling. We wanted to see the very excellent Pont du Gard, which meant that we were unable to participate in the morning tour of Avignon and the Palace of the Popes. Very disappointing considering the tour was back at the boat by lunchtime and the ship remained docked in Avignon until midnight, but there were no tours available in the afternoon and although we could have gone to the Palace of the Popes ourselves it would have meant paying extra for entry, without a guide, and having to queue in the extreme heat to do so. My granddaughter did the Pont du Gard (the Roman aqueduct) tour which she enjoyed and then she did Grignan and the truffle farm visit - she even got to see the dog find a truffle. She enjoyed both of them

The Papal Palace was increadble. We really enjoyed the town sitting in the afternoon at a cafe having a drink.

papal Palace is fantastic and very interesting. We did the side trip to Grignan, which is jaw-droopingly picturesque, and the truffle farm, which was interesting and fun.

Excellent tour of papal palace. Saw Pont d'Avignon on our own after lunch. Did the obligatory song and dance selfie.

Truly a great stop. Loved the small little alleyway streets with many little discoveries. Loved the market we stopped at during the tour. would have loved to stay there longer. Also went to Pont-du-Gard. The aqueduct was amazing.

Avignon is a very interesting old walled city. I have always wanted to see the Bridge at Avignon. Now I have. On our first late afternoon of our Viking cruise, they offered a walk down to the bridge which you could see from our boat. The guide talked about the history of the bridge. Then we went across the street to the city of Avignon and took a walking tour that hit some different spots than the walking tour the next day did. I would recommend both walks. Read Less

What can I say - it's Avignon. The walking tour again gave us a sense of the city and enough free time to explore the Pope's garden and the marketplace. We also got to see a bit of modern life there in the shops in town.
