It was nice to see some of the sights, and the National Archeological Museum was interesting, but we had some issues due to the protesters making things difficult to get around them in the city center. Also, the Metro and the taxis were both on strike while we were there. We had planned to Metro to everything and a strike was planned two days before our visit, and we had to book a trip in the end, which we didn't want to do. I would be VERY concerned to start or end a cruise in Piraeus because of the Greek protesters and economy right now. Athens has some lovely antiquities and archeology, but to be honest, it's a dirty, crowded capitol city. We will stay on the ship next time if this is a stop on the way to another great place. Sunset was very nice! Read Less

Took the ships Taste of Athens tour. Just enough. Guides sound system was annoying. Athens needs a Mayor Daly to come in and clean it up. Never saw so much graffiti in my life.

We took the Hop on! Hop off! bus from the port(Piraeus) to Athens (20 euros a person). Very convenient because of the taxi strike. We toured Athens on the bus. It is not a pretty city. Did not enjoy the city, very disappointed. After the tour of the city, we stopped at the Acropolis. Lots of walking uphill. Make sure you have water. No protection from the hot sun. But the walk is worth it, what a view! We hopped back on the bus for a stop at Plaka. Had lunch, very touristy and expensive, but we were thirsty and hungry and did not have the energy to walk further in for a more reasonable place. Did some souvenir shopping and then took the bus back to port. I would not visit Athens again, not impressed by the city. Read Less

Athens was not as great as I had imagined it. We visited the Acropolis and were deeply disappointed. First of all it's not as great as it looks on pictures. There are people everywhere for starters and the pavement and facilites just... SUCK! They have been working in this thing for over 30 years and to me it looks just like in the beginning. They have no railings on the stairs and the paths are just dirt and unpaved. If you get thirsty up there don't bother getting a drink. You'll pay 6,50 Euros for a cup of coke. Read Less

The traffic was ridiculous so it took almost two hours to get from the ship to the Acropolis... it took 17 minutes to get back. This is just a big city- so don't expect too much. Our tour guides displayed a lot of disgust for their home city and really didn't paint it very favorably. The Acropolis is definitely something interesting to see, but now that I've seen it, I never need to do it again. Read Less

Since we could hear none of the commentary, we could have done just as well on our own ... without the high tour cost. We mentioned this at guest services and were disappointed that Celebrity made no effort to partially compensate us for this. Read Less

The port city for Athens is Piraeus. This was the second time that I had visited this port. Having been to Athens once before, we opted for a tour that took us to Cape Sounion, to visit the Temple of Poseidon. This site was diminutive compared to the temples found at Acropolis. Cape Sounion was also quite a distance away from Piraeus (about 1-1/2 hours ride on a tour bus). On our way back to Piraeus, our tour took us for a coffee break at a restaurant in Vouliagmeni. I would not feel comfortable recommending this tour. If I were to return to Athens again, I would much rather spend the day walking at the Plaka or visiting the archaeological museum. Read Less

The port requires a 20 minute drive into the downtown area, we took the Royal Caribbean excursion to the downtown. The bus left late which made me mad, and justified why we did mostly private tours for the remaining cities. The city was nice, I think you need a better map than the one RC supplies though, because the only things marked on it are stores they want you to visit. Since we had limited time we decided to skip the Parthenon and wander through the Plaka (shopping area). Was nice enough, but I don't think we would return. Read Less

We landed in Athens around 7 AM. I had booked a walking tour with www.athenswalkingtours.com, with a meeting time in Syntagma Square at 9:30. The e-mail they sent me stated that it was easy to take public transportation from Piraeus to Syntagma Square. This turned out to be untrue, but it didn't matter. Our ship wasn't cleared by the local authorities until 9:30, so we missed the walking tour. My son and I had been waiting in line for over two hours, and we were both cranky, so it was not a good start to the day. Then, I discovered that the public transportation was not only far away (about a kilometer) from the port, but certain legs of the trip were out of service. So I arranged to take a taxi to the Acropolis for 30 Euro. There were loud protests around the Acropolis. So after walking around and seeing the ruins, I took a taxi back for 30 Euros. This was by far the worst port of the trip. But the view from the Acropolis cannot be matched. Read Less

This was our second trip to Athens and I am sorry to say I am not planning on returning. Athens had changed alot since our last visit, you can no longer walk, run, or jog through the Olympic Stadium and can only take pictures through a gate. Unfortunately, vandals have ruined it for all (why would anyone take bits of the stadium home as souvenir?). The Acropolis is "under renovation" and was when we were last there, but there seems to be alot more fences and structures blocking the site and making it difficult to take really good pictures. We hired a driver to take us around Athens, which was great and we saw and did alot more than others taking public transportation could see and do in the time we had there. Another downfall was all the graffiti, evidently football fans like to promote their teams on the buildings? The Plaka was great. If you haven't been to Athens before, than you should go and decide for yourself.   Read Less

So now, we met Takis again and went to the Canal of Corinth, the old city of Corinth, to the seaside Napflo where we enjoyed wonderful Greek food. Along the way, Takis ,stopped at a local farm where we were offered an option of white, rose or red herculean wind from wooden vats. We purchased the red 2. liters for 3. euro On the way back to Athens, the highway had collapsed from rain. A state road had collapsed, very unusual.
