We packed in a lot on this very hot day! We visited the Herakleidon Museum (small, but good exhibits), had an excellent lunch and the best Greek salad of my life, and then headed over to the Acropolis Museum (which has air conditioning! and ice cream!). We next visited the Temple of Zeus and the National Garden, went back to shop for souvenirs at the Acropolis Museum (and enjoy the air conditioning), and then around 5:30pm we headed over to the Acropolis and Parthenon. There weren't any lines, and it was a bit cooler. We were glad we waited until the evening to go. Afterwards, we were super tired, so after a bit of walking around the Plaka we headed back to the ship. Read Less

Athens is very easy to navigate on your own. I wish I had spent a few more days exploring the city! We took a taxi to the port, booked by our hotel.

We got off the boat rather late...like 11AM and there were no taxis because they were on strike. Apparently this happens a lot. We got a private driver (named Labros) to take us to the Acropolis and arranged to have him pick us up at 3pm. The round trip cost E100. We found a private guide to walk with us (cost E130) and didn't have to stand in line for tix. After a hour in the hot sun, we strolled down toward the city and found an excellent restaurant called The Old Tavern of the Fisherman. It was excellent. We did not arrange any of this through the ship, just played it by ear. It was obviously more expensive than going through the ship, but we like the flexibility to do our own thing and it worked out great. Read Less

I arranged a tour with PK Tours for a full day tour of Athens. Great tour and we went to the Parthenon first and beat some of the crowds.

Head out early to beat the crowds by grabbing a taxi, heading to the Acropolis and then walking around to all the other tourist sites. Its easy and fun to navigate through the tourist areas. or you can get on the Hop on Hop off bus.

We took the green metro to the opposite end of the Acropolis and it was much quieter than the main entrance. Lovely outlook from the coffee shops on the way and some stalls with reasonably priced souvenirs. As we approached the queue for tickets, we looked up at the Acropolis and could see it looked a difficult walk up and I'm not very good with steps etc. So we walked around the surrounding area and just enjoyed the views.
