Athens, Greece: Athens was wonderful, to see the buildings that were constructed so long ago, was amazing. It was heart warming to see the restoration work that is going on. We need to preserve this for our grandchildren and their grandchildren. The Acropolis is an impressive sight and shows the greatness of ancient Greeks. To see the Olympic stadium was amazing too. We were dropped off in the centre of Athens after our tour. Royal Caribbean staff were there to greet us as we disembarked the bus and were advising us on how to get back to the ship. We had lunch in a local restaurant that was amazing. Read Less

Walk to the train station, take the Metro directly to the Acropolis instead of getting dumped in the city square on RC's $59 bus trip (which, oh, by the way, you need to take the same Metro, at the same price as from the port, to get there anyway). Ask the ticket seller the name of the stop to get off when you buy your ticket, but it's only about 5 from the port. The Agora, Temple of Zeus and Olympic Stadium are all within 15 minutes walk, point-to-point, from each other. Read Less

Hired a private driver, see review above. Our driver was our tour guide, trained as such, but not able to enter sites, but wasn't needed. He gave us all info that we wanted. Remember comfortable shoes, and bring water with you. Get up early for the main attractions, it's worth it, everything gets very crowded. The city of Athens would get a rating of 3, but our driver was so great I gave the port a 5. Read Less

The streets were very dirty. Make sure that you do not wear sandals if walking. The Acropolis and the Temple of Poseidon were not a strenuous hike.

My favorite port. We had arranged for Paul's Taxi in Athens. Dimitri, our driver, was a kind, considerate and humerous man. He had so much fascinating information to convey. The Acropolis was amazing, we traveled to Cape Sounion and then to the Nat. Arch. Museum which I could have stayed three days in. This was my highlight. Read Less

Athens itself is amazing but the downtown is about 1/2 hour from the port and the tour is very long. Also, beware - it is extremely hot and crowded in the summer with no shade. Definitely do a tour of the Acropolis and Plaka.

The city itself is not impressive, a large place filled with large apartment buildings. It is also the home of Western Civilasation. A visit to the Acropolis should not be missed.

We used Athensbytaxi, and were met at the port by our driver. We spent an excellent morning with him, beating all the crowds (and the heat) at the various sights, and gaining a great insight into the history of Athens. He dropped us off at a lovely cafe at the start of the Plaka, where we had an excellent lunch before strolling through the Plaka itself, and returning to the port by train. Be aware that there are two cruise terminals, and if your ship is at the furthest away one, it is a very long walk from the station! Read Less

Our experience in Athens was pretty miserable. There were 6 cruise ships docked in Athens while we were, so everything was RIDICULOUSLY crowded. We spent several hours at the Acropolis only to be stuck in swarms of people all shoving their way to the top in hundred degree heat. Our tour - which we booked through the cruise - was not worth the money AT all. I was very disappointed that we missed out on so many great sights in Athens. Read Less

Our 29 year old driver was extremely negative about Athens when we started asking about the people and culture. We had to ask him to be more positive while driving us around. With a broken toe, I climbed the Acropolis which I give a 5+. The Acropolis was as beautiful as Nia Vardolis described in her new movie "My Life In Ruins". Unbelievable to stand in history & beauty dating back to the 5th century! It's a must see. Be careful while climbing down as the marble can be slippery. Wear sneakers or rubber soles. We were fortunate enough to see the new Acropolis museum which opened 11 days before we got there. We were not impressed with Athens as it is a dirty, crowded city but still holds amazing ruins among a big city. We enjoyed our mom & pop restaurant we found in the Platka. Delicious musaka!! we pull into Piraeus which is attached to athens. you can take a cab or a bus into athens to to go the Plaka. We took a tour to the Acropolis which is a must see. Go as early as you can- the line is RIDICULOUS around 12. it took us almost 30 minutes just to get down from the Acropolis with all the people leaving. We did take a tour and booked through Celebrity and had an air conditioned bus as well. We also stopped by where the Olympic Games were held and stopped in the Plaka for some additional shopping. If you have been to the Plaka before, I would not suggest getting off the bus. You have to take your own personal transportation back and Athens traffic can take 45 minutes to an hour to get back to the port of Piraeus- but its ultimately up to you. Athen is HUGE and I had no idea- but it is soo pretty. the people are very friendly and will help you if they can. It helps to know a few phrases in Greek though- just in case Read Less

Here we followed the advice of other postings on Cruise Critic and hired a private taxi to take us to the Acropolis and around Athens. We hired Nikos Loukas from www.privategreecetours.com and he was terrific. He was very professional and his van was nice, clean and well- air-conditioned. He met us at the port at 8am and we went right to the Acropolis before all of the bus tours arrived. He explained everything we were going to see and was there waiting for us when we were done. We then went on a half day tour of Athens including the Temple of Zeus, a hill overlooking the city, the Olympic stadium , changing of the guards at the Parliament and a few other sights. Nikos had it all timed perfectly. We saw the city, took some great pictures and we were back at the boat by 1pm, well before any of the other tour groups.   Read Less

Enjoyed Athens very much did the excursion to the Olympic Stadium & The parthanon. The driver also gave us a talk when passing points of interest i.e The Onasis mansion, football stadium. He also told us about his life in Greece how the economy had changed since the euro which had hit the citizens hard & all about his son having to do national service, This gave us personal insight to see beyond the sunshine & beaches as to what it is realy like to live day to day in Greece. the traffic alone was very congested & the scooters dodging in and out was amazed no one was in an accident, realy enjoyed this ancient city. Athens was actually better than I had expected having heard that it wasn't worth a visit except for the Parthenon. My husband and I both liked it although we (I) wished for some time to shop at the Plaka. Our Taxi driver, John, took us to the highest point in Athens where we were actually looking down on the Acropolis. Worth a visit but a tour bus won't take you there. I thought we could have skipped the temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounian, but loved the Temple of Zeus and the Parthenon. The changing of the guard was also wonderful. Read Less

The acropolis can't be missed, but it was crowded and hot. Athens in general is kind of a dirty city, but if you get up early, you can beat the crowds. Also, do not hire a tour guide outside of the ruins. She was terrible!
