We booked a tour through Celebrity but it was canceled, and we did not bother to reschedule to something else. At the port, the "taxi bandits" are waiting for the tourist! The first one to approach us offered a 4 hours tour of Athens for "only" 300 Euros. I said we were just going to the Acropolis. The second offer was 200 Euros for 4 hours, and it kept going down to 120 for 3 hours. We still wanted to go to Acropolis only...we were told all kinds of stories of why we needed to buy the 4 hours service, and we saw many passengers buying. The trip to Acropolis was 25 Euros. From there it is a short walk to the new Acropolis museum that just opened at the end of June. Beautiful and air conditioned!, then another short walk to the old town with hundreds of small stores and restaurants. A short taxi ride to the larger museum, and then back to the ship. Very good! Again, dirty but good things to see. We were caught in the middle of a bike race, so we stayed on the bus way too long. We then also saw Mykonos, Istanbul, Croatia and Venice. great bargains in Croatia and Istanbul. Very mush shocked at how all the people that we met in Europe were so aware of our new President (Obama). We actually had traveled before the election and they were so happy that President Bush was leaving office. Read Less

We took a private tour with Vasillis Vassalos. He can be contacted at www.athenstours.gr .We toured the city, the Parthenon, the Temple of Zeus etc. and then went down the sounion coast to the Temple of Poseidon. I can't say enough about this temple. It sits at the top of a hill overlooking the Aegean. It is just breathtaking. On our return drive, we stopped at a taverna and had dinner. Mr. Vasillis is very personable and a great driver. The ship's excursion was over $200 pp and Vassilis fee was 225 Euros. Dinner cost us a 100 Euros. Read Less

Glad I did this trip in the cooler months. We did the trip to the acropolis and then to Cape Sounion. Beware at the acropolis of the sellers they are extremely persistent. Lot of walking to see the sights, but worth it.

The Acropolis was quite a sight. Take a taxi to the Acropolis as soon as the ship docks and you can beat the rush.
