We packed in a lot on this very hot day! We visited the Herakleidon Museum (small, but good exhibits), had an excellent lunch and the best Greek salad of my life, and then headed over to the Acropolis Museum (which has air conditioning! and ice cream!). We next visited the Temple of Zeus and the National Garden, went back to shop for souvenirs at the Acropolis Museum (and enjoy the air conditioning), and then around 5:30pm we headed over to the Acropolis and Parthenon. There weren't any lines, and it was a bit cooler. We were glad we waited until the evening to go. Afterwards, we were super tired, so after a bit of walking around the Plaka we headed back to the ship. Read Less

Depending on what you wish to do (we opted for the hop on hop off bus the blue one) these are located to the left once you exit the main terminal building about a 5 minute walk. There are 3 different companies Greyline (yellow bus the one MSC uses)(red hop on hop off)we opted for the blue one as we had picked up a leaflet in a previous port of call. There was a 40 minute trip around Piraeus (where you could hop on and hop off if you wished) then the main tour started just below the Acropolis, and went around Athens, which took about an hour and 40 minutes As Athens was so busy we decided just to stay on the bus. The tour was very informative and well worth the money paid. When we returned to Piraeus we had a look around the local town which is quite pleasant. Read Less

Athens is very easy to navigate on your own. I wish I had spent a few more days exploring the city! We took a taxi to the port, booked by our hotel.

Ignore taxis and tours and take x80 bus from pier. 45 mins to Acropolis. €2.50 return. Quite a climb up to Acropolis so start early and wear hat and sunblock, take water.

We got off the boat rather late...like 11AM and there were no taxis because they were on strike. Apparently this happens a lot. We got a private driver (named Labros) to take us to the Acropolis and arranged to have him pick us up at 3pm. The round trip cost E100. We found a private guide to walk with us (cost E130) and didn't have to stand in line for tix. After a hour in the hot sun, we strolled down toward the city and found an excellent restaurant called The Old Tavern of the Fisherman. It was excellent. We did not arrange any of this through the ship, just played it by ear. It was obviously more expensive than going through the ship, but we like the flexibility to do our own thing and it worked out great. Read Less

I've been to Athens many times, so didn't need a tour - we just took a cab into the city and visited some sites and had lunch with local friends on Monastiraki. However, if you're self-touring, the port is a little confusing in terms of finding a taxi for a ride into the city (most will only accept you if you want a taxi-tour), and it's WAY too far to walk to the metro station. Otherwise, expect crowds and traffic around the main tourist areas like the Acropolis and Plaka. Allow plenty of time to return to the port - not only for traffic, but also because you may have a long line to get through security at the cruise terminal, depending on how many other ships are in port. Head out early to beat the crowds by grabbing a taxi, heading to the Acropolis and then walking around to all the other tourist sites. Its easy and fun to navigate through the tourist areas. or you can get on the Hop on Hop off bus.

For Pireaus/Athens I would recommend taking a ship excursion. The reason being it is so crowded with tourists and tourist buses the traffic is horrendous. We had a bit of a panic on our own trying to get back to the ship on time as the traffic was so bad and so slow. We just made it but I did not need the stress. With the ship excursion they will hold the ship until the group gets back so you can enjoy the day without the stress. Just know that you need to be a real walker to get up to the Acropolis – it is quite a hike. You can take the hop on/hop off buses (yellow and blue only go from Pireaus port). However, as I said, the traffic is so bad and there is no guarantee that you could get back to the ship on time, and they will not wait! Kotor looked wonderful and scenic from the ship. It docks right by the town so you can just walk off and go right into the town. The problem for us is that when on a cruise we are very late sleepers! The ship docks at 7 AM and leaves port at around noon so you have to be up early. Since we did not get off the ship (we slept too late!) I cannot comment on whether you should take an excursion or do this on your own. But since the ship leaves so early and you don’t have much time in port, I think I would go with a ship excursion so you know the ship will wait for your group to return! Read Less
