We arrived in Athens two days before embarkation. We used Michael's Amazing Tours to have a private tour of Athens and also booked our airport to hotel transfer & our hotel to Piraeus transfer. Best decision ever, covered a lot of ground in an all day tour of Athens & to the Temple of Poseidon in Cape Sounion. Really glad that we had a driver meet us at the Athens airport and also to take us to the Piraeus Port; made our transfers so much smoother. Read Less

Very nice scenes on the hop on hop off bus except for the notice of terrorism and high crime left in our stateroom the night before we were a bit nervous about venturing off the bus to see more.. One lady from our group was threatened by a cab driver that he wouldn’t return her to the ship until she gave him more money and proceeded to escort her to an atm machine.. She may not have read the notices and they were written in so many other languages in such small print she may have not even noticed it. Read Less

A wonderful city, very busy, with good local buses. Piraeus is a long bus ride from the port. A better option is to use the train, taking the train from Piraeus centre into Athens centre

This day was amazing, and all the more so because it was rather unplanned. We got off the ship at 6:30am (an hour before dawn--ugh!). We shared a cab with a couple we had met on the ship, and ended up hiring him to drive us around for a couple of hours. (We had this idea that we were going to walk everywhere, but it's a lot bigger than we thought!). We first went to Lycabettus hill, and stayed there for about 1/2 hour taking pictures of Athens and the Acropolis hill all lit up as the sun gradually came up. He then drove us to the Olympic stadium, and then to the Acropolis right when it opened. Waited in a very short line to buy tickets, and enjoyed the hill without many crowds. Getting up early is the way to go! We used our Rick Steves Audio Europe app (the walking tour) to enlighten us as we visited the Pantheon and other sites there. After an hour or so there, our cab driver took us to the Temple of Zeus, and then dropped us off near the Plaka. We walked through the Ancient Agora of Athens (included in our ticket along with the Acropolis and the temple of Zeus). We then stopped to eat at a quirky place called Little Kook (google it!). A great place for sugar-a-holics. I ate a wonderful greek yogurt/honey/fruit/seeds thing, but my companions had huge shakes topped with waffles and frosting, crepes, etc. We then walked to the Archaeological Museum, which is one of the best there is. We took the subway back to Pireus (where the port is), and walked about 20 minutes from the subway stop to our ship. Read Less

It's easy to grab a taxi via Uber and get to the center of the city. From there, you can walk or take the metro to anything you might want to see in the few hours you have. The Acropolis Museum is worth seeing.
