Greek people are so wonderful. They were so welcoming and seemed happy to have tourists. There were so many people there ready to help, happy and proud to share their city. Our ship left from there so we stayed a couple days. We stayed in Koukaki, a safe area in walking distance of The Acropolis and Plaka. Don't miss Anatiofika! It's in between The Acropolis and Plaka - small little neighborhood, like a postcard, quaint, and so beautiful. Find the little church in Anatiofika with the Greek flag and you'll see the most amazing view of Athens from there! The taxis in Athens can be sketchy. We took a transfer from the airport which worked great and was the same price as a taxi. Even though we had a delayed/diverted/cancelled flight, Athens Airport Taxi/run by Emma followed our changes, always responded to each communication immediately and took care of us. We were also happy that Athen's has Uber. But be weary of using a Taxi. They'll take advantage of you. We actually saw a fight break out with a Taxi driver! Be careful in that that each area in Athens is different and can go from safe to unsafe within a block. In general, the closer to The Acropolis, the safer it is. We loved Athens - even though our luggage hadn't arrived (and wouldn't for five days). It's the locals there that make it so wonderful! Read Less

There are no sites near the dock. We made private arrangements for a tour of Athens. It worked out great.

Spent more time on the bus than anything else. The Acropolis is fantastic. Didn't really care for the shopping area as it was mainly tourist traps and restaurants. Did enjoy an amazing Greek salad.

This was an overnight visit. We have been to Athens several times and have done the Acropolis so we got the HOHO bus (Grayline - two days for the price of one deal) to the excellent Archeological Museum. There are 3 HOHO bus options and the stops are close to the cruise terminals. Had two enjoyable days walking the streets, eating Greek food, shopping and exploring under and around the Acropolis. I am sorry, but I hated Athens. It is crowded, dirty and awful. We went to The Acropolis and it was like downtown NYC. It was so crowded trying to walk up to the Parthenon that I got claustrophobic. I got separated from my husband and we didn’t find each other for over an hour. Rick Steves recommends getting there before 9 or after 4-5. That may help. We took the Hop-On bus and it was a constant traffic jam. Sorry, this wasn’t my thing. Read Less

We used the Hop-on-Hop-off to get to the Acropolis and then to get back to the ship. We used the Rick Steve's app to tour the Acropolis and Ancient Agora. The we use FreeTour to do a walking food tour in the Plaka. All good fun.

We love Athens and have stayed there before. We took a local bus from near the Port Gate to the Metro- locals are friendly and tell you where to get off. Then into the centre, getting off at Thissio it is easy to take the pedestrianised walk along the side of the Parthenon- looking up at that you cannot but marvel at this ancient city. Further walking through the Plaka district is charming, and a picnic lunch sitting on a ruin was fun. A final glass of Greek wine in a trendy wine bar completed our day before hopping back on the metro at Monastiraki for the return journey back to the Port. Read Less

Athens is a very cool city, but it is 30-40 minutes from the port. We were disappointed that we did not get to see the Acropolis because it was closed due to a lightning storm in the area.
