Arles is a beautiful town. Fascinating history. Van Gogh Museum is here. We painted in the style of Van Gogh in an art studio in the old town

A fantastic city with really interesting landmarks, such as the Roman arena and theatre, as well as several Van Gogh references. The only reason I can't rate it higher is that the guide we had was terrible - all he wanted to do was talk about himself and we couldn't wait to get away from the tour to experience the city for ourselves. We went on the Camargue and Aigues-Mortes tour and this was a disappointment. For some reason I thought we would see some of the Camargue horses, and we did, but just through the bus window. We did see lots of sunflowers and the bus stopped so we could get out and take photos. Then my granddaughter went on the Van Gogh walking tour. She felt that she knew more about it than the guide. Also it was very hot. Read Less

We opted for another independent walk which covered the amphitheater, a local cafe and some good shops.

The Roman coliseum was so interesting. This trip was my first experience seeing such ancient ruins up close. Being able to look at a Van Gogh painting and then see what he used as inspiration was wonderful.

Loved walking in the footsteps of Van Gogh and so glad I read "The Yellow House" before we cruised. Check out the Viking reading list for great ideas to bring the area alive.

The only day it rained on our trip was in the city of Arles. The ship was docked about 30 minutes away by bus. If not for the rain, this would have been a very interesting city to walk around in.

We particularly enjoyed this site. The guide gave us a sense of how different Provence can be. Together with all the visible Roman history, the atmosphere gave us a feeling of the place. This was in spite of all the usual tourist shops. Our guide kindly filled us in on her prospective as to what to look for in the unique products of the region, which was very helpful to our Christmas shopping. Getting to go inside the Roman colisseum/amphitheater and climb around was breathtaking, especially after Melanie's explanation of its history during Roman times and during the Middle Ages.
