We did Jewels of the North which was amazing! We saw lovely valleys full of sheep and goats, and Icelandic horses. We saw volcanic craters, and wild looking lava formations at Dimmuborgir, steam vents and sulfur cauldrons at Namaskard, and Niagara-like Godafoss waterfall. A fish lunch was included - not much to talk about but a great bathroom stop. ...
Akureyri: We pre-booked a private tour with friends to Godafoss Waterfall, followed by a scenic drive through the Vikurskard mountain pass, the old town and the Lystigardurinn botanical gardens. We arrived on a Sunday. The biggest church in town was closed. The main street had a couple of open stores. We did a tour of a dairy farm (friendliest cows I've ever met), had really fresh ice cream (outstanding) and visited an Icelandic horse farm (poorly explained). The horses did 5 different gaits. ...
Nice port with plenty of activities. Visit the round building visitor center for a lot of information on this and other areas of Iceland. Here, I discovered a public bus to Godafoss that cost $12 round trip, as opposed to paying $50+ for other tours. The little downtown touristy area was quite nice. ...
