We shouldn't have been on this cruise. Early autumn we booked a P&O cruise on Adonia sailing from Naples however this cruise was cancelled just days before Christmas due to 'essential technical work' it was able to sail on its Christmas voyage though! After several hours spent checking late offers/availability we booked a NCL 'freestyle' cruise sailing from Barcelona on Friday 13th January 2012, attracted, I have to admit, mostly by the price £550 for a mini suite. This was only the second cruise we have been on, the first was with Celebrity on the Eclipse sailing from Southampton which ignited our love of cruising as we thoroughly enjoyed that experience.

We booked our own flights to Barcelona then caught the A1 bus from the airport to Placa Cataluna (5 euros 30 for a single ticket)they run every 6 minutes and couldn't be simpler. From Placa Cataluna catch either another bus or metro to Drasannes station about two stops, then another bus to the cruise terminal from the Christopher Columbus monument. In all this costs a maximum of 9 euros per person single. I have been told it could be cheaper if you catch the train from the airport going directly to Drasannes. The charge applied by NCL to deliver passengers from the ship to the airport at the end of the cruise was $30 each plus service charge. Several guests we spoke to had flights included with their cruise and they were dropped off at the airport on return far too early leaving the ship at 8 a.m. for a 1:15 p.m. flight.

Embarkation was straight forward. Our suitcases were taken from us before entering the terminal building, you will be asked for your cabin number, then we were directed to the shortest queue. Our check in person was efficient, even trying to help the staff member next to her who had a particularly difficult guest to process. We then ran the gauntlet of 'photograph opportunities' which we rejected. We boarded at deck 7. There was not a lot of guidance from staff as to where you could eat etc. so we made our way to the self service restaurant.

Cabin Review

Mini-Suite with Balcony

Cabin MB

Mini-suite with balcony 11622, deck 11. Plenty of good storage, spacious, good size balcony with two reclining chairs and small table, could sound insulation, excellent bathroom, over bath washing line, hot water, pathetic tv schedule and set needs to be updated to flat screen. Easy access to lifts and stair case to garden cafeteria on deck 12.
