  3. Navigator of the Seas
This was our 21st cruise on RCI and our 4th on a Voyager class ship. We were looking forward to a 4 night gettaway with sea days by booking the Navigator of the Seas stopping at only one port, Cozumel, Mexico. Check-in was slow and troublesome as many passengers' luggage was opened to inspect for contraband liquor. The line backed up as bottles as small as 3 or 4 ounces were removed. Our luggage was opened and inspected in an unpleasant manner and although no liquids were found, there was no apology. After clearing security there was another delay and although we are Diamond C&A members there was no expedited check-in line. When we fianally boarded there were no staff greetings and everyone was on their own to locate cabins. We had a mid-ship inside cabin which was comfortable and sufficiently large for a 4 night cruise, the bedding was excellent and the layout well designed. We met our cabin attendent who seemed tense and unhappy. Throughout the cruise the crew was unsmiling and unfriendly. As the old saw says, unhappy crew, unhappy ship, unhappy passengers. This seemed to be a topic of passenger conversation throughout the cruise. The dining room food was only fair at best and so we ate in Portofino, the extra charge restaurant. the food and variety of offerings in Portofino were very good, but again the waitstaff was not paticularly cordial. Everyone from the passenger service desk to the officers seemed to be going through the motions but without warmth or friendliness. It was very awkward to have hellos go unanswered . On board entertainment was good as expected and the ship itself is beautiful with many inviting public spaces. The sea days were pleasant but short on activities. It appeared that RCI is cutting costs on food, service, and number of staff. Hopefully this was an isolated experience and we will hold off final judgement on Royal Caribbean until we have taken another cruise, but a letter and e-mails have gone unanswered.

Port & Shore Excursion Reviews

  • Cozumel
Shopping in Cozumel is very good, offering fine jewelry, silver and an unlimited choice of Mexican crafts and souvenirs at all price points. A walk along the main thoroughfare with the ocean on one side and shops on the other makes for a pleasant afternoon. There are numerous restaurants and bars offering snacks and lunches. Some cozy and quiet and some with a party atmosphere. Snorkeling and beaches are worth a shore excursion but we have been here many times before and preferred a relaxing stroll and time on board.
