Norwegian Jewel Cruise Review by trivia nut
- Sail Date: January 2012
- Destination: Bahamas
- Cabin Type: Mid-Ship Oceanview Porthole Window
We drove to the NYC port terminal and parked right next to the ship...easy coming and going. We arrived at 11:00AM and boarded at 11:30AM. By 11:45AM we were eating lunch in the Tsar's Main Dining Room. We skipped the buffet and wanted to be waited on as soon as we got on board.
Staff- The best on the seas. They were so much fun. Thanks to Dazzling Devyn for all the fun at the trivia games. There is a big future for you with NCL. Thanks to Sassy Stephanie for teaching us how to dance to "Thriller". The Flash Mob at the White Hot Party was a blast. We enjoyed having dinner with Captain Idar(Thanks for dedicating your life to keeping us safe and happy.) Our Cruise Critic Group Planner, Julia Guntzberger, did a terrific job of planning our Meet and Greet and arranging for us to meet the Captain.
A special thanks to Joao, our cabin steward. Our cabin was clean and ready every time we returned. Loved the towel animals, especially the monkey and the Eskimo. If you haven't found it yet, we put the mouse in the refrigerator.
Food - So many great places to eat. Our favorite was Azura. All of our meals were delicious. Even on the private island, Great Stirrup Cay, the lunch buffet was outstanding with so much variety. Blue Lagoon serves comfort food all day long and we enjoyed eating there for lunch. Go all the way to the back of the ship for a great breakfast buffet on Deck 12. Also we had Heidi in Tsar's serving us a great breakfast and spoiling us at dinner with the Captain.
Fellow Cruisers - We had a wonderful group of folks on this cruise. Even 300 well behaved children were fun to watch while dancing and clapping to the music of Next Stage,(Thanks for the Beatles Tribute...Dan the Man has an awesome voice and we enjoyed "Hey Jude".) All of my Cruise Critic friends were a delight. Don't miss the Quest comedy adult game and the Newlywed game...so funny.
Be sure to go to the Meet and Greet if one is planned for your cruise. If not, call NCL and start planning.
Ports - Florida was a bit cool, so we stayed on the ship and enjoyed the peace and quiet while we explored the ship. Great Stirrup Cay was paradise!!! It was such a delightful day in the sun along with that delicious lunch. We shopped in Nassau and it did get a bit warm, but no one was complaining, since we knew we would be returning to NYC (3 inches of snow and slush...yuck.) We had great weather for all of our ports and the smoothest sailing I have ever experienced. Most times I forgot we were moving.
Embarkation was a breeze. We just walked off the ship at 8:00AM, mushed our way to our car parked next door at the garage, and were on our way at 8:10.
Don't forget that Room Service is available for breakfast every morning (no charge, just tip a few bucks)so we ordered this for 7:30AM, just before we left the ship.
We have cruised 15 times and this was one of our best cruises. All week long we had wonderful friendly service and smiles from a dedicated group of people who really seem to enjoy their jobs of making cruisers happy.
Thanks again to all. We have already put down our deposit for our next NCL cruise. We hope to do the Jewel again. We also loved the Dawn and the Gem. We are looking into the Breakaway for 2013. Be sure to take advantage of the Cruise Rewards by putting down a small deposit and getting back On Board Credit. You have four years to decide on your next cruise.
When you read other reviews the main complaint is that everything costs extra. This is not true. You can choose to spend your money on extra activities if you want, or you can choose among the many, many places to eat and fun activities that occur all day long.
Tip for the ladies - You don't need a lot of fancy clothes. Smart casual was acceptable all day and night. Bring slacks and shorts with deep pockets. You won't have to carry a purse. Your key card, copy of the Free Style Daily, and Kleenex are all you need for the day. Bring a sweater. The ship can feel cool at times.
Tip for the guys - Leave the tuxedo and sports jackets at home. If you want to dress up, all you need is a shirt and tie (and slacks). Only folks who dressed up did so for family portraits.
Forgot to mention that we had our photo taken with Dora and Diego from Nickelodeon. Your kids will love all the fun stuff planned for them.
Enjoy your next cruise!!!
