We just returned home this week from our first vacation in years. This was my boyfriend's first cruise and my second sea jaunt. We booked this particular cruise with Royal Caribbean on the Grandeur of the Seas, primarily, for the destination to the Cayman Islands. By happenstance, two days before our departure, we glanced at the on-line ship's itinerary only to be stunned and befuddled! We were NEVER notified that our ship would not be going to the Cayman Islands. (We had already booked a much anticipated excursion to swim with the stingrays on the islands...disappointed was putting it mildly!)

Instead of heading to the exotic Cayman Islands, Royal Caribbean sailed to Key West, Florida! I could have driven to Key West for heavens sake! (As it turns out we were only allowed five hours to explore Key West; my Valentine's Day was hurried and uneventful! I was livid!)

We questioned the destination disturbance. We contacted a Royal Caribbean representative at their main headquarters. She stated the ship was unable to dock in the Caymans due to the devastation caused by hurricanes. She was overtly indifferent to our dismay! (We received similar treatment when we complained onboard at the Pursers Desk...basically, they reflected a "too bad, not our fault, we can do as we please attitude".) We were mindful that Royal Caribbean was allowed to modify established destinations, but I paid for an authentic seven day Caribbean cruise, not to the Gulf of Mexico! (At the conclusion of our cruise, two crew members mentioned that the reason we did not visit the Cayman Islands centered more with the obligation of the company's ships to dock at Key West a requisite number than the actually damage from the hurricanes. As I type this assessment of my cruise, I am painfully reminded that the Grandeur of the Seas set sail for the Cayman Islands a few days ago!) I suspect for our next cruise, we will be looking to one of Royal Caribbean's competitors!
