Holland America Veendam Cruise

Sail Date: August 2011
Destination: Bermuda
Embarkation: New York (Manhattan)
This was our second cruise on Holland America. The last was almost 30 years ago, but this was identical to our first cruise.

My husband and I traveled with my daughter and my niece who are both in their early twenties. We had a set dinner time as we enjoy having the same waitstaff throughout the cruise. The service on the cruise was excellent even though dinner service tended to take a long time. The food was very good! Both girls are vegetarians and the selections were excellent.

We really enjoyed the company of the staff in the public areas. They went out of their way to give us excellent service. Our room stewards were amazing. The staff we encountered all knew our names and went above and beyond to accommodate us. It was an older crowd, but we enjoyed the sun during the day, the Ocean bar for happy hour, the guitar player in the Mix before our 8 p.m. dinner and the Crow's nest was a fun spot for dancing etc. We also enjoyed the shows--especially the More comedian/magician/dog show! One night was very rough due to a tropical storm. Since the ship is a bit smaller, it was very rocky.

Overall I would rate this cruise as excellent! We loved going to the beaches in Bermuda & transportation was very convenient. Hamilton has a great night life for the the 21 plus crowd. We also liked the street festival on Front Street. Less

Cabin review: BA193 Vista Suite with Verandah

Our room was in a perfect spot! It was on the Ninth floor right off the stair case. It was very quiet even though it was centrally located. We went two flights up for the buffet and pool. We only went one floor down to the dining room and public areas. The room was large! We had a queen sized bed, a good sized love seat. We had a beautiful balcony that faced Front Street in Hamilton. The storage is awesome! It was just the two of us while our girls had an inside room on the 5th floor. We were able to have them come into our room for room service or a drink. It was quite comfortable.

Port and Shore Excursions

We were expecting two ports of call-St. George and Hamilton. We did not stop in St. George due to rough seas. This was not a problem because we were given transportaion vouchers if we wanted to visit the port which is easy to reach by ferry or bus. We took advantage of an extra day at the beach. Hamilton is lovely for shopping. The transportation is very convenient. We took the bus a couple of times and opted for a taxi the rest of the time. For $20 you can get a taxi directly to any beach you wish to visit. We chose Horseshoe due to the amenities (chairs, umbrellas and bathrooms). The taxis are also ready and waiting when you leave the beach. The water and the sand are the best in the world. We were not interested in taking an excursion because we wanted to be at the beach. Hartley's Helmet dive is one of the best things to do in Bermuda, but it leaves from King's Wharf so we did not book it. Holland America does not offer this excursion.
