We were coming back from a 6 weeks trip in Europe that included a T.A. crossing and a Danube river cruise when we saw the advertisement for a cruise on the Adriatic by RCCL on the Voyager of the Seas . The combination of bad weather in Eastern Canada, the itinerary of the cruise and the fact that we never had cruised with RCCL made us pack our suitcases and fly to Venice ! We do not regret our decision as overall it was a very interesting cruise ! Itinerary : 5+ Very surprising for a ship of this size : the small port of Koper (Slovania) , Dubrovnik in Croatia , Varenna and Bari on the Eastern coast of Italy and finally Venice where we spent a night on board and had a full day to visit. In all cases ,ample time was allocated to visit the port of call and the region ! Embarkation : 4 The Maritime Terminal in Venice is in a permanent stage of construction and it is very difficult for a cruise line to insure a smooth process . On this , RCCL did a better job than the other cruise lines we had used in Venice . Disembarkation was different though : there was a Free shuttle bus supplied by the Port Authority from the ship to the entrance of the port and we were never told about this ; we had to walk close to 1 kilometer to the People Mover ! Dining: 3 Breakfast was the worse we have experienced with the 10 cruise lines we have travelled with and this both in the Windjammer and the Carmen dining room ! Lack of variety , overcooked eggs , dried potato sticks , burned bacon are a few examples ! We could not get Eggs Benedict at the dining room ( first time on a cruise ) and the morning specialty proved to be a small portion of quiche with a sugar tasting crust ! Lunch was a bit better but also disappointing !No exotic sections in the Windjammer and poor presentation in the dining room ! I was served a tandoori meat skewer that did not have any Indian flavor but was accompanied with yogurt and cucumber ( Mid-East style ). The calamari salad had a total of 6 calmar slices ! Dinner was the beast meal of the day . We had taken the late service and it was very late (9.30 hrs ) It was a problem when the second show started at 11.00 p.m. as service had to be rushed not to miss a big part of the show !Food preparation, preparation and presentation were very good and comparable to what we had on Costa , NCL,MSC and Princess ! There was no lobster served during the cruise , no Baked Alaska evening nor dessert extravaganza like we have had on other cruise lines Public Rooms : 5+ We really appreciated the layout of the Voyager of the Seas ! It surely does not look its age (12 years) as most locations look very modern and it has been kept very clean . It is quite different from the other ships we have experienced so far with its huge promenade in the middle of the ship where shopping stores, bars, specialty restaurants and customer services are intermixed . We never felt crowded around the pools and it is very easy to find yourself on this ship! Corridors are wide and nicely decorated Cabin: 5 We had an Inside cabin with a big window ! It was overlooking the Promenade and this was very interesting when there were parties, parades or spectacles late evenings . It was noisy from 10.00 to 12.00 pm but afterward it was like a normal inside cabin Entertainment: 4 Lots of pros and cons on this subject . Overall, this is a very lively ship ! Mercedes, the tour director is full of gusto , funny and very interesting . She has prepared a lot of different activities for the passengers and the best ones are the outside ones ! The evening shows were another story ! It ranged from bad to excellent ! The first two performances by the ship troupe were really bad while the last one was very good . The performance by the Russian gymnasts and the one with the Argentinian gauchos were good but the most interesting one was the Show on Ice.We could have seen it 2 or 3 times Spa and fitness :5 We did not utilize very much the facilities but when we did , it was comparable to other ships Shore excursion :4 We took 1 shore excursion : San Marino and Ravenna . The price was good and the guide was very good , The visit of San Marino proved very interesting and we were left 2 hours on our own to shop, eat and visit . This was fine except that it did not leave us much time for the Ravenna portion so we were rushed for that part . The guide insisted that we had to be back by 4h30 even though the ship was leaving only 2 hours later. The price asked for the shuttle bus between the ship and downtown in Venice, Dubrovnik and Bari was way too much compared to public transportation . Service : 5 Excellent on all aspects ; our cabin attendant John was more than attentive to our needs, our dinner stewards Val and Mia were examples of efficiency and very interesting, the customer services staff was always available and proficient . Overall it was an excellent cruise for the price . RCCL needs to improve mainly on the food aspect but we will still cruise with them in the future
