We were disappointed with the food. The Windjammer food selection was very poor, breakfast was fine but lunch was dreadful. Chicken thighs that were tough and inedible. Honey stung chicken which was soggy, only stir fry available was vegetarian. Dinner in the restaurant was not good either. No brown rolls available any night apart from the first night. No lobster night, we were told the lobster was too small so they did not bring it on in Rome. This was our 4th cruise but the menu at dinner did not offer the choices we have had in the past. The beef was recommended by our waiter most nights and it was good but it would have been nice to have more choices.
We loved the stops, did a tour with Sicily Life in Messina which took us to the cathedral in Messina, Savona which features the bar Vitelli where the Godfather was filmed, then on to Forza D'Agro to see the church where the wedding was filmed and then on to Taormina where we had lunch and browsed the shops, one of the highlights of our trip. We loved Rome, stayed at 3 star Hotel Piazza di Spagna, very close to the Spanish steps, we took a superior room which was very spacious, loved the location. We had some lovely meals at Restaurant 34 just across the street. Did the Green Line open bus tour of Rome, what an amazing city. In Kusadasi, Turkey we went to Ephesus, we took a taxi on arrival but they did try to fleece us, maybe the cruise excursion is worth doing. It was a fantastic day and we had a terrific guide. We had been to Athens a few times previously so did not do tours there. Crete we were disappointed with, the town of Chania is about 30 minutes by bus from the port and is quite busy. We took the bus and then took a taxi to the beach that the cruise ship use but it was Friday and lots of teenagers came on what seemed to be half day from school and had fun playing racket ball but made a racket, we were looking for peace and quiet!
Entertainment on board was mediocre, you would be depressed going to the Schooner Bar, the piano player did not smile once or try to interact with guests. On our last cruise the Schooner bar was great fun. We enjoyed the casino bar, the bartenders there were very friendly, hello to Miguel! The nightclub was fun too. The shows were reasonable, the ice show is excellent but a lot of entertainment we felt was geared towards a huge Italian contingent, sailing from Rome there were over 900 Italians on board. I would hesitate before going with Royal Caribbean again because of the poor quality of the food.
We had a Junior Suite but was distressed on arrival to find hairs in bath. Then what appeared to be dirty bed linen in plastic bag jutting out from under the bed, apparently it was clean linen but it did not appear to have been ironed. Our bed linen was not crisp and ironed, the throw on the bed was full of creases.
