Maasdam Cruise Review by poipie
- Sail Date: May 2011
- Destination: Canada & New England
- Cabin Type: Large Interior Stateroom
We booked the cruise through HAL WEB site 5 weeks before departure. Got NN interior cabin GAR, which means no specific cabin number allocated at time of booking but a cabin is guaranteed but you don't know which one, And this under 600$. The Week before departure we received the confirmation, our cabin was upgraded to J level. BTW There's only one cabin at NN level on the Maasdam, slight chances you end up with it.
We got to the ship before noon, very few people, registration went very fast. First contact with the HAL representatives was very pleasant, everyone was helpful and smiling. Got to our cabin in no time.
On our cruise the average age was high. Half the ship looked like an "old folks home" on mothers day. Grand children with their parents and grand parents, some wanna be grand parents with wanna be parents and some never will be grand parents with the never will be parents .....
This is a matter of taste and perception. Its a subject were its easy to complaint when you want. Generally speaking you will always find something you will like. The LIDO restaurant has a large variety of food, You can get breakfast, lunch, snack, dinner and late snack at 11:00PM. The late snack has a different theme every night. The dinning room has a daily menu and a "fix" menu. Contrary to previous reviews we found the service a little too fast, within an hour the dinner was over. As soon a plate was finished the next on was served. After the first night I asked the waiter to make sure half the plate would have vegetables, which was observed the rest of the cruise, didn't have to repeat. It was always possible to get additional food, for example one night there was lobster tail, I got 2 lobster tails as requested. The DR offers breakfast but you get the same food as the LIDO.
We didn't understand why there were 2 formal nights, nothing special happened those nights. On other sips the captain used to be present for a toast or ..... here nothing. We guessed it was 2 occasions to dress up .... for no reason
The crew is Indonesian, I found everything was done in a timely manner. The crew is very polite and always smiling.
The shows are very good, we thought they were at the same level as other cruises we did if not better some nights . Unfortunately these shows last less than an hour.
The ship is very clean, the staff does a great job keeping it clean. Everything is new (refurbished) Beds are very comfortable. Public areas are spacious, you always can find a place to sit and relax.
Too many smoking area (non smoking not enforced) Allowing people to smoke in specific area is exactly the same as allowing people to pee in specific area of the pool .... I will not cruise with HAL again if smoking is still permitted.
If you want to sleep in the morning this is not the ship. Cruise director does his announcement every morning at 7:00 or 8:00. This doesn't include the people talking loud (early) in the hallways and door slams.
Despite these annoying anecdotes it was a nice cruise and we enjoyed it, don't we all have something to improve.
