We were guests on the Christmas 2024 cruise on the Utopia of the Seas.

Overall, we had a great experience, and the ship excelled in some ways. There were just a few things that didn’t measure up to other cruises we’ve done. For reference, we cruise about once a year. We’ve been on one Carnival cruise, two with Royal Caribbean, six with Disney Cruise Line, one with Princess and one with Celebrity.

Ship design: The Utopia is a beautiful and well designed ship. You can tell it’s still quite new. They built on what they learned from the previous ships in this class, and everything is nicely put together. I especially liked the colorful modern art in the stairwells and elevator lobbies, and the decor in the Main Dining Room. I only wish there were more quiet seating areas without music playing or loud engine noise, to combat sensory overload. Celebrity and Princess did that better.

Perfect Day at CocoCay

What a pretty little tropical island. Our jet ski excursion was canceled due to wind, and we didn’t pay for the water park, so we just walked on the beach for a bit and then lazed around in hammocks for a while. There were plenty of lounge chairs and hammocks available in the area around the excursions desk. Everything was clean and well maintained. The outdoor lunch buffet food was hit or miss. Good sandwiches, rubbery vegetables. I wish they had more variety in the shops on the island, because they almost all sell the same cheesy tourist-trap clothing and jewelry. Overall, though, we had a very pleasant beach day.
